Your long-distance move between Berlin and Sweden – personally organised

Why Lion Umzüge Berlin?

As a Berlin-based company, we coordinate your move centrally from the capital. We are not a local removal company at your destination in Sweden; we plan and carry out the transport from Berlin. This creates transparency and continuity for every step of your project.

Planning your long-distance move

Good preparation is the key to a smooth process. Together we check access to the flat, special items and preferred dates and define the steps required for your move.

  1. Initial consultation: inventory and special requirements
  2. Preparation of an individual schedule
  3. Scheduling of packing, loading and arrival
  4. Preparation of packing materials and special packaging
  5. Loading, transport and unloading
  6. Final review and handover

Packing service and furniture protection

Delicate furniture, glass, porcelain or works of art require special care. We advise on which protective measures make sense and, on request, take care of professionally packing your belongings so that they survive the journey safely.

Transport and logistics

For the long-distance transport, we choose suitable vehicles and make sure the load is properly secured. Logistical planning includes choosing the route from Berlin, the loading sequence and coordinating handover times so that everything runs in an orderly way on site.

Experienced movers in Berlin carefully transport office furniture and packed boxes to ensure an efficient transition.

Handover in Sweden

Unloading and handover at the destination take place as agreed. We clarify unloading times, access conditions and where you would like items placed in advance so that your furniture is positioned safely and neatly at the destination. Please note that, as a Berlin provider, we organise our services from Berlin and do not act as a local Swedish company.

Moving Berlin–Sweden: by ferry or over the bridge

There are two routes to Sweden. Either the ferry runs from Rostock or Sassnitz to Trelleborg, or the lorry drives via Denmark and the Øresund Bridge to Malmö. Which route we choose depends on the destination, ferry times and costs. With the ferry, Malmö is only just over 400 kilometres by road, Gothenburg around 700, and Stockholm about 1,100 kilometres including the sea crossing.

Planning around ferry times

Because the ferries run to a timetable, a move to Sweden is planned backwards: when do we need to be at the port, when does the ferry arrive, how long is the drive to the destination? This determines when we load in Berlin. For Stockholm or places further north, we allow at least two to three days.

Formalities

  • No customs for removal goods within the EU
  • Deregistration at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) in Berlin
  • Anyone staying longer than a year generally registers with the Swedish Tax Agency and receives a personal identity number
  • Without a personal identity number, many everyday things such as a bank account or mobile phone contract are more difficult

Living in Sweden

In the cities, many people live in apartment buildings with lifts; in the countryside, in wooden houses with gardens. With country houses, the path from the lorry to the door is sometimes long or unpaved. In winter, snow and early darkness are added to this. We therefore plan to unload in daylight wherever possible.

What you should take with you

Swedish flats are often let with a kitchen and household appliances. Check beforehand what is already there. Anything that stays in Berlin we can dispose of for you – see house clearance Berlin.

Costs

For Sweden, the ferry crossing or bridge toll, fuel and overnight stays are added to staff and vehicle costs. The page moving company Berlin costs explains what else affects the price; all the countries we drive to are listed under international removals Berlin. For the route further on to Norway, see the page moving Berlin–Norway.

Moving to a big city or to the countryside

In Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö, many people live in rented or cooperative flats in multi-storey buildings. In the countryside, wooden houses with gardens dominate, often far from the nearest town. For the move this means: in the city, the lift and a place to stop matter; in the countryside, the access road and the distance from the port.

What is different in Sweden

Many flats in Sweden have built-in wardrobes and a fully equipped kitchen. Washing machines are often located in a shared laundry room in the basement. Check beforehand which appliances you really need. Electrical appliances from Germany do work on the power grid, but some large appliances are not worth transporting.

The inventory list

There are no customs within the EU, but a numbered inventory list is still helpful – for checking on arrival and for your household contents insurance.

Moving to Sweden: ferry, folkbokföring and Scandinavian everyday life

Sweden is a popular destination for Germans looking for nature, peace and quiet and a good work-life balance. Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö offer jobs in technology, industry and research, and the country is sparsely populated and vast. As Sweden is an EU country, the move is customs-free, but distance, ferry connections and registration require planning.

Across the Baltic Sea or over the bridge

There are several routes to Sweden. The ferry from Rostock to Trelleborg is the obvious connection for Berliners, with around six hours at sea. Alternatively, you can go via Denmark and the Øresund Bridge to Malmö, or take the ferry from Kiel to Gothenburg. From Trelleborg it is another 600 kilometres or so to Stockholm via the E4 or E6. We book the ferry in good time, as places for lorries are quickly taken in high season. For most destinations, we plan two to three days.

Registering with Skatteverket

In Berlin, you deregister at the Bürgeramt. In Sweden, the tax authority Skatteverket is responsible for the population register, known as folkbokföring. Anyone who intends to live in Sweden for at least a year registers there and receives a personal identity number. You need this number for banking, healthcare, a mobile phone contract and much more. Allow some time for registration and have your employment contract and ID ready.

Living in Sweden

The rental market in Swedish cities is tight, and first contracts are often sublets. Many flats are in apartment buildings with lifts. In the countryside, many people live in wooden houses with large plots and sometimes unpaved access roads. We plan the vehicle and team according to local conditions.

Winter and weather

Swedish winters are long and cold, and in the north there is snow for months. A move in winter is possible, but road conditions require experience and suitable equipment. We recommend moves to central and northern Sweden in spring, summer or early autumn. We protect electrical appliances, plants and delicate items against the cold.

What else is important

Sweden is largely cashless, so a bank account with a card is essential in everyday life. You have to register your car in Sweden after a certain period, and there are fixed mandatory periods for winter tyres. Pets need the EU pet passport, and some additional requirements apply to dogs.

Costs

The costs depend on distance, ferry fare, volume and additional services. For smaller moves, a part load is often considerably cheaper. Find out more on our page international removals Berlin.

Arriving in Sweden

Sweden is the land of fika, the coffee break with pastries. If you embrace it, you will find it easier to make contacts. For many people, nature with its lakes, forests and archipelagos is the main reason for moving.

A tip on choosing a date: around Midsummer in June and during the summer weeks in July, many Swedes are on holiday, and authorities and property managers work with reduced staff. It is better to schedule important appointments before or after.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start planning a move to Sweden?

Start with a consultation: we record the volume, special transports (for example a piano or artworks) and access conditions. On this basis, you receive a clearly structured schedule and advice on the preparation you need to do.

What do I need to prepare before loading?

Label boxes by room and contents, mark fragile items and make sure access is clear. If you wish, we take care of packing and securing your furniture safely before loading.

How much does a move from Berlin to Sweden cost?

Malmö is around 450 kilometres away by ferry from Rostock or via Denmark and the Øresund Bridge, Stockholm about 1,000. Ferry or bridge fees, diesel and overnight stays are added to volume and floors. You receive a fixed price. More on cost factors under moving company Berlin costs.

How long does a move from Berlin to Sweden take?

To Malmö or Gothenburg usually two days, to Stockholm or Uppsala two to three. The ferry times from Rostock to Trelleborg set the pace, so we plan the loading day to match the departure.

How much lead time do I need for a move from Berlin to Sweden?

At least six weeks in advance, preferably eight in summer. Ferry places for lorries are quickly taken during the holiday season, and the date for the key handover in Sweden is often fixed early as well.

How are my belongings insured when moving from Berlin to Sweden?

During the journey to Sweden, including on the ferry, we compensate for damage in accordance with the rules of the German Commercial Code (HGB) up to a limit of 620 euros per cubic metre of loading volume. For art or designer furniture, you should also take out transport insurance.

Do I need customs papers when moving from Berlin to Sweden?

No, Sweden is part of the EU, so your belongings do not need customs papers. If you stay for at least a year, you register with Skatteverket in the population register and receive your personal identity number.
