Private Move Berlin
A private move is more than loading furniture: it marks a new chapter in your life. At Lion Umzüge in Berlin, we accompany you personally and in a structured way, from the first idea to setting up your new home. We bring clarity to the process and take the work off your hands so that you arrive relaxed.

Your private move, personally planned and carried out
Individual advice
At the start, we listen carefully: which rooms, which special features and which wishes matter to you? Based on this information, we draw up a plan tailored to your home.
Packing & protection
We use suitable materials and techniques so that fragile items are transported safely. Every piece receives the protection that matches its value and shape.
Transport process
A clear process reduces stress on moving day. We agree the steps with you so that you always know what happens next.
- On-site survey and definition of the scope
- Joint agreement on services and time slots
- Careful packing and labelling of the boxes
- Safe loading with consideration for access routes and house rules
- Transport to the destination and protected unloading
- On request, assembly and final handover

Assembly and handover
When reassembling, we pay attention to function and appearance. Once everything is set up, we go through the checklist with you so that everything is exactly where you imagined it.
Private move Berlin – what is included and what you decide yourself
A private move is as individual as the flat you are moving out of. Some customers only want movers and a van, others want an all-round package from packing to hanging the lamps. We put your move together from individual building blocks, and you decide what we take care of. That way you only pay for what you really need.
The building blocks of a private move
| Service | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| Transport with movers | Always – this is the core of every move |
| Dismantling and reassembling furniture | For wardrobes, beds, shelving systems and kitchens |
| Packing service | When time is short or there are lots of fragile items |
| Boxes and packing material | If you do not have sturdy boxes of your own |
| No-parking zone | In almost all inner-city locations where parking is scarce |
| Disposal of old furniture | If not everything is coming to the new flat |
| Interim storage | If moving out and moving in are not on the same day |
How long a private move takes
A one-room flat is often done in a few hours. For a three-room flat on the third floor without a lift, we usually reckon with a full working day, and for a house with a cellar and attic, sometimes two. What matters is not just the square metres but the amount of belongings, the floors and the distance from the van to the door. That is why we look at the flat beforehand.
Typical mistakes in private moves
- Starting to pack too late – in the end everything ends up in boxes in no particular order
- Overloading boxes so that they tear or can barely be carried
- Not applying for a no-parking zone and having no space in front of the building on moving day
- Not securing the washing machine – the transport bolts must be fitted before transport
- Important documents, keys and medication in the removal van instead of in your own bag
Private moves in every Berlin district
Whether a period building in Kreuzberg, a prefab block in Marzahn or a detached house in Zehlendorf: we know the particularities of each neighbourhood. You can find more about the individual areas on the page Moving Company Berlin Districts. And if you are leaving Berlin, we also plan long-distance moves to any city in Germany.
Costs of a private move
The price is made up of staff, vehicle, working time and the additional services you choose. After the on-site survey, you receive a fixed price covering the agreed services. Guide prices by flat size can be found on the page Moving Company Berlin Costs. If you pack yourself and get rid of old furniture beforehand, you will save noticeably.
Tax deductible
In many cases, the labour costs of a privately motivated move can be declared in your German tax return as household-related services. For job-related moves, it is usually even possible to deduct them as income-related expenses. Keep the invoice safe and clarify the details with your tax adviser.
As a moving company in Berlin, we handle private moves of every size – from a mini move to a whole house.
Private move step by step: the last four weeks
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 4 weeks before | Apply for a no-parking zone, get boxes, take a day off for the move |
| 3 weeks before | Declutter, clear the cellar and attic, book bulky waste collection |
| 2 weeks before | Pack books, decorations and seasonal clothing, set up mail forwarding |
| 1 week before | Pack the remaining boxes, use up food supplies, inform the neighbours |
| Day before | Defrost the fridge, secure the washing machine, pack a box for the first night |
The box for the first night
Pack a box or bag with everything you need for the first evening and the next morning: bed linen, a towel, toothbrush, chargers, medication, a few plates and cutlery, toilet paper, light bulbs and a few tools. Take this box with you yourself so that it does not disappear among a hundred other boxes.
Handing over the flat
After moving out comes the handover to the landlord. Note the meter readings, take photos of all rooms and ask for a handover report. Whether cosmetic repairs are required usually depends on the tenancy agreement. If the flat is to be handed over broom-clean, we can take care of that after clearing it.
Families, pets and plants: private moves in real life
A private move does not only concern furniture and boxes but everyone who lives in the flat. Children, pets and plants need their own attention on moving day. With a little preparation, the day becomes more relaxed for everyone.
Moving with children
For small children, a move is exciting and sometimes frightening. Talk about it early, show them the new flat if possible, and let children pack their own moving box. On moving day it is usually better for small children to stay with grandparents or friends. Pack the children’s room last and set it up first in the new flat. A familiar bed and their favourite toy help them settle in. For older children, the way to school is an issue. Walk it together once before the first day of school.
Moving with pets
Cats and dogs notice that something is different when boxes appear. On moving day, keep cats in a quiet, empty room with food, water and a litter tray, and hang a sign on the door so that nobody opens it. Dogs are often better off with friends. Transport small animals and birds yourself in the car, not in the removal van. In the new flat, animals should first have one room to themselves before they explore the whole flat.
Houseplants
Plants do not cope well with heat, cold and darkness. We transport large potted plants; smaller ones are best taken by you. Water the plants one or two days beforehand, not on moving day, so the pots are lighter and do not drip. Tie long shoots loosely together. In winter, plants should not stand in a cold vehicle for long.
Contracts and meter readings
Electricity, gas, internet and the broadcasting fee do not move with you automatically. Notify your providers of the move in good time so that electricity and internet work in the new flat from day one. Note the meter readings in both flats and take photos of them. Change your address with your bank, insurance company and employer after registering at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office).
Involving the neighbours
A note in the stairwell a few days beforehand creates understanding. Write on it the day and approximate time of the move. If the stairwell is busier than usual for a few hours, the neighbours will know why. At your new home, moving day is often the first opportunity to introduce yourself.
The evening after
After a long moving day, the flat is full of boxes. Set up the beds first and hang curtains or blinds in the bedrooms. Everything else can wait. Many customers have us help them unpack the kitchen so that at least coffee is possible the next morning. If you wish, our packing service will also take care of unpacking.

Contact us so that your move is stress-free and reliable. We support you with clear communication and practical expertise so that you quickly feel at home.
How much does a private move in Berlin cost?
For a private move, what counts is the size of the flat, the floors at both addresses, the carrying distances from the building to the van and the services you add. A two-room flat on the ground floor is moved faster than a period flat on the fourth floor. You receive a fixed price in advance. Guide prices under Moving Company Berlin Costs.
What is included in a private move with Lion Umzüge?
Depending on your wishes: boxes, packing, no-parking zone, dismantling furniture, transport, reassembly and disposal of packaging or old furniture. Many customers pack themselves and leave the carrying, transport and assembly to us.
How soon can I get an appointment for a private move?
For a private move, four to six weeks’ lead time is ideal, and rather more at the end of the month. If you are flexible and can also move during the week or in the middle of the month, short-notice dates are often possible.
Can I combine several services with my private move?
Yes. With your private move you can book a packing service, assembly service, clearance of the cellar or attic and storage of furniture – all in one quote.
