Senior moves in Berlin: safe, respectful and tailored to you

Moving home later in life is often about much more than transporting furniture. It is about cherished memories, familiar routines and choosing a new home where you will feel comfortable again. We support you with empathy, plan transparently and carry out the move so that your needs remain at the centre.

An elderly lady smiles contentedly in her bright new living room while a mover sets down a box, marking a successful fresh start.

Our approach

We begin with a personal conversation on site, in which we discuss your wishes and note any special requirements. On this basis we draw up a clear schedule that leaves room for changes and avoids unnecessary stress.

Discretion and respect go without saying for us: we handle keepsakes with care and agree together which items need special protection or should be given priority.

Your benefits

With us, you stay in control of your move without having to manage it on your own. You benefit from transparent communication, practical help with organising and packing, and a structured handover of your new home.

Support with decisions is particularly valuable: we help with sorting out belongings, respond flexibly to changes and make sure your new living situation quickly becomes functional and homely.

How the move works

The process depends on your situation and can be adapted to individual wishes. It typically includes these steps:

  1. Initial consultation and walk-through to establish the details of the move.
  2. Joint selection: what comes along, what is sorted out or packed separately.
  3. Careful packing, labelling of fragile items and protection of furniture.
  4. Gentle transport and proper placement in the new home.
  5. Assembly and positioning of furniture, plus help with unpacking if desired.

Practical support

On site, we take care of safe packing, minor assembly work and setting up furniture. On request, we assist with connecting household appliances or coordinate tradespeople when details need to be sorted out on site.

We make sure the rooms are handed over broom-clean and that the furnishings leave easy, unobstructed walkways — especially important for a home suited to older people.

What we pay attention to

With senior moves, safety and care come first: we use suitable protective materials, plan short carrying routes inside the home and attach importance to clear labelling so that you can quickly find your belongings again.

We also take personal rituals and daily rhythms into account, so that the move interferes as little as possible with your everyday life and you quickly find your way around your new surroundings.

Above all, a senior move needs time

Anyone leaving a home after forty or fifty years takes not only furniture with them, but memories. Often the move is to a smaller flat, a flat with a lift, assisted living or a care home. That means many things cannot come along. These decisions take time, and we never rush anyone. Our team works calmly, explains what it is doing and asks before anything is packed or given away.

What we do differently from a standard move

  • A longer on-site survey in which we walk through every room together
  • Help deciding which furniture will fit into the new home
  • Packing by our team, room by room over several days if you wish
  • Assembly and unpacking in the new home so that it is ready to live in straight away
  • Clearance and disposal of whatever is not coming along

Moving into a care home or assisted living

Facilities often have fixed move-in dates and rules about which furniture residents may bring. Clarify this with the facility in advance and we will follow their requirements. A familiar armchair, your own bed and a few pictures on the wall make a big difference. We hang pictures, connect lamps and arrange the furniture so that walkways remain clear.

Clearing the old home

After the move, a large part of the household is often left behind. We clear the flat, separate valuables from items for disposal and hand it over to the landlord broom-clean. You can find out more on our Flat Clearance Berlin page.

For relatives

Many senior moves are organised by children or grandchildren who do not live in Berlin. In that case we are your local point of contact, keep you updated by phone and coordinate everything with you. If your parents are moving closer to you, we also plan moves to other cities – see Long-Distance Moves Berlin.

Costs and subsidies

If a care level (Pflegegrad) has been assigned, the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) may, under certain conditions, grant a subsidy for measures to improve the living environment, which can include a move. Ask them before the move takes place. Our services are itemised individually in the fixed-price quote; explanations of our prices can be found under Moving Company Berlin Costs.

Preparing the new home: space, safety, familiarity

With a senior move, much is decided before moving day. The new home is usually smaller, often low-barrier, and not every piece of furniture will find a place there. Planning early spares both the person moving and their relatives difficult decisions under time pressure.

A furniture plan on paper

A simple floor plan of the new home helps enormously. Draw the rooms to scale on squared paper and cut out the most important pieces of furniture as small rectangles. This quickly shows whether the armchair, wardrobe and dining table will all fit into the living room. Many older people find it easier to decide with a plan like this than with figures. If you wish, we bring a folding rule and measure the most important furniture during the survey.

Choosing keepsakes consciously

Photos, pictures, the wedding china, a favourite book: these things turn a new flat into a home. Take your time to choose them consciously. What cannot come along can perhaps be passed on to children or grandchildren. Some families take photos of furniture that stays behind as a memento. We pack keepsakes with particular care and label the boxes so that they are unpacked first at the new address.

Avoiding trip hazards

The new home should have as few trip hazards as possible. Loose rugs, cables running across the room and furniture that is too low are typical risks. When setting up, we make sure walkways stay clear, the bed is at a good height and lamps are where they are needed. If a care bed or a rollator is planned, additional space for turning is required.

On moving day

For many older people, moving day is exhausting. It helps if a familiar person is there all day. Pack a bag with medication, glasses, hearing aid, charging cables, ID and important phone numbers that does not go into the lorry. On request, we fully furnish one room first, usually the bedroom or the living room with the armchair. That way there is a quiet place while work continues in the other rooms.

Home emergency call, care service, pension

If you have a home emergency call system, you must inform the provider in good time so that the device is connected in the new home. The care service, GP practice and pharmacy should also know the new address. Notify the pension insurance, health insurance and bank of the change of address after registering. A mail forwarding order ensures that letters arrive during the first few months.

Time to settle in

After the move, it takes time for the new home to feel familiar. Small things help: the clock in the same place as before, the picture above the sofa, the spot for the newspaper. On request, we hang pictures and lamps and arrange the furniture so that familiar routes stay as similar as possible. If something needs to be rearranged after a few days, we are happy to come back.

If the previous home needs to be cleared completely, we also take care of the flat clearance and make sure you no longer have to worry about the old flat.

Deciding together

For relatives it is often tempting to make decisions quickly themselves. For the person who is moving, however, it is important to be asked. So it is better to plan a few extra appointments and go through the home together, room by room.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

How early should we plan the move?

We recommend discussing the process in person as soon as you have a rough time frame or a new home in mind. This leaves enough time for individual arrangements and stress-free preparation.

Do you also help with sorting out belongings?

Yes. We guide you through the decisions in a structured way, offer practical sorting aids and, if you wish, transport the selected items. We respect your decisions and handle keepsakes with care.

How much does a senior move in Berlin cost?

With a senior move, the price depends on how much we take on: sorting out, packing, dismantling, transport, furnishing the new home and disposal. People often move into a smaller flat, which reduces the volume. After a calm conversation on site, you receive a fixed price. Guide prices can be found under Moving Company Berlin Costs.

What does a senior move with Lion Umzüge include?

We take time for planning, help you decide what comes along, pack, dismantle, transport and set up the new home so that favourite pieces and everyday items have their place straight away. We are happy to involve relatives in the arrangements.

How short-notice can a senior move be booked?

For senior moves we prefer to plan with a little more time so that nobody is put under pressure. If a relative has to move into a care home at short notice, please get in touch anyway – we will check how quickly we can schedule a team.

Can I combine several services with a senior move?

Yes. For senior moves, our packing service, assembly service, house clearance of the old home and storage of furniture that no longer fits into the new home are especially popular.

How are my belongings insured during a senior move?

We are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB), generally up to 620 euros per cubic metre of load space. For heirlooms, porcelain or pictures of high personal or financial value, we are happy to discuss additional transport insurance.
