Transporting an upright or grand piano means more than simply loading heavy items: it is about precision, care and respect for a delicate musical instrument. At Lion Umzüge Berlin, we plan every transport individually, agree the process with you and make sure that your instrument arrives at its destination in the best possible condition and stays ready to play.

Your piano in safe hands: tailor-made piano transport in Berlin
Our services
We carry out upright and grand piano transports within Berlin, handling your instrument professionally and gently. This includes expert packing, secure fastening in the vehicle and careful loading and unloading on site.
On request, we advise on special requirements at the destination, clarify access conditions and plan the necessary equipment. Communication with you remains clear and transparent, so that you always know how the process is planned.
How to prepare your instrument
A small preparatory step helps to reduce risks: remove loose sheet music, small parts and accessories that could be damaged during transport. If possible, close the piano lids and secure any moving parts.
Make sure the route from the room to the transport vehicle is clear. Let us know about building work, narrow hallways or particular thresholds so that we can plan the right technique in advance.

Our process
So that you know exactly what you can rely on, we work according to a clear, easy-to-follow process:
- Initial contact: recording your wishes and briefly checking the access conditions.
- Survey (if necessary): on-site appointment to assess access and effort.
- Quote: description of the measures and the material required.
- Scheduling: agreeing a suitable transport day.
- Transport and handover: careful loading, safe transport and handover at the destination.
Mastering special challenges
Narrow stairwells, winding hallways or special floor coverings require precise planning and a more experienced approach. We use suitable ramps, straps and protective materials to prevent scratches and knocks.
If direct access is not possible, we work out alternative routes together and carry out the transport using coordinated lifting techniques. Protecting the instrument is always the top priority.
Upright or grand piano: two different tasks
Depending on the model, an upright piano weighs around 200 to 300 kilograms, a grand piano considerably more. Both are heavy, delicate and unwieldy – but in different ways. An upright piano is transported upright and carried with special straps. A grand piano is tilted, the legs and the lyre are removed, and the instrument is secured on a piano board. Both require experience, the right tools and enough people.
How a piano transport works
- Assessment of the instrument, stairs and routes, often already based on photos
- Protection of the instrument with blankets and film, locking the lid and key cover
- Carrying with straps and, where possible, on dollies
- Secure fastening in the vehicle, upright and padded
- Positioning at the destination in the desired spot
Stairwells in Berlin
A piano on the third floor of a pre-war building without a lift is not unusual in Berlin. Spiral staircases, narrow landings and low passageways make the transport demanding. We take a close look at the route beforehand and plan the number of carriers accordingly. Measure the narrowest point in the stairwell and the width of the door, and send us the measurements together with photos.
Have it tuned after the transport
Every transport, even a very careful one, and the change in room climate can affect the tuning. Let the instrument settle in for a few weeks after the move and then have it retuned by a piano tuner. We do not offer tuning ourselves.
The piano as part of a move
Often the piano does not move on its own, but as part of a complete household. In that case, we plan it into moving day, usually as the first or last item, so that it does not end up standing between boxes. We also take instruments along on long-distance moves – find out more under Long-Distance Move Berlin.
Costs
The price depends on the instrument, the floors, the routes and the distance. General information can be found under Moving Company Berlin Costs. For other heavy single items, see also our page on furniture transport in Berlin.
What piano transport has in common with a normal move – and what it does not
A piano may be heavy, but it is not just a particularly heavy cupboard. The mechanism inside is delicate, the soundboard reacts to knocks and changes in temperature, and the legs of a grand piano are not designed to bear its weight when it is tilted. That is why piano transport has its own rules: the instrument is never stood on its keyboard, never set down abruptly and always transported padded.
Temperature and humidity
Pianos do not like rapid changes in climate. In winter, the instrument should not stand in a cold vehicle for long, and in summer not in the heat. We therefore plan the transport so that the piano stays in the lorry for as short a time as possible. At its new location, it should not stand directly next to a radiator, a window with strong sunlight or a damp outside wall.
Digital pianos and keyboards
Digital pianos are lighter but also delicate. If available, we transport them in their original box, otherwise well padded. It is best to pack cables, pedals and music stands in a separate, labelled box.
Preparation on your part
- Close the lid and key cover, remove the key
- Take sheet music, metronome and decorations off the instrument
- Clear the route from the instrument to the front door
- Decide on the new location in advance
What we need to know to plan your piano transport
Depending on its design, an upright piano weighs between about 200 and 300 kilograms, a grand piano often considerably more. So that we bring the right team and the right tools, we need some information in advance. The more precise it is, the more smoothly transport day will go.
Instrument and dimensions
If possible, tell us the manufacturer and model. For an upright piano, the height is particularly important, because tall concert uprights are heavier and tip over more easily. For a grand piano, we need the length. The details can often be found inside the case or on a type plate. If you cannot find anything, a folding rule and a photo will do.
The route out of the building
For us, every metre between the instrument and the vehicle counts. How many steps are there, and are they straight stairs or spiral stairs? Are there tight bends, landings or steps in front of the front door? How wide are the doors and hallways? If the piano is in a rear building, we also need to know the route across the courtyard. In many Berlin pre-war buildings, the stairwell is wide enough but the flat door is narrow. A few photos of the route outside help us more than any description.
Buying an instrument privately
Many of our jobs come about when someone buys a used piano privately. We then collect the instrument from the seller and bring it to you. Clarify with the seller beforehand when we can come and whether someone will be there. Also ask when the instrument was last tuned and whether there is any damage to the mechanism or case. We do not check the instrument musically; we transport it. If you are unsure, have a piano tuner look at it before you buy.
Music schools, churches and rehearsal rooms
It is not only private individuals who move with a piano. Music schools, parishes and theatres have instruments moved within a building or between locations. There are often time slots here that need to be coordinated with lessons, church services or rehearsals. Tell us who the contact person on site is and which rooms we may enter.
More on the topic
This page describes our service. If you would like more detailed information in advance, our guide on what to look out for when transporting a piano in Berlin contains advice on preparation, room climate and tuning. We explain which factors influence the price in our article on the costs and process of a piano transport. For the quote itself, a phone call or a short enquiry with photos is all it takes.
By the way: even if you only want to move the piano within your flat, for example from the living room to the study, a quick call is worthwhile. Just a few metres over floorboards with thresholds can damage a heavy instrument and the floor.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
How is a piano protected during transport?
We use special blankets, shock-absorbing pads and secure fastening in the vehicle. This keeps the instrument stable during the journey and protected from vibrations.
Do you offer transports in multi-storey buildings without a lift?
Yes. For transports between floors without a lift, we plan for the additional effort and the appropriate equipment. Clarifying the access situation in advance helps us to design the safest and most efficient process.
What does a piano transport in Berlin cost?
A piano transport depends above all on the instrument and the stairs: an upright piano on the ground floor is moved more quickly than a grand piano from the fourth floor of a pre-war building. Based on your information or a survey, we will give you a fixed price. Further guide prices under Moving Company Berlin Costs.
What is included in a piano transport with Lion Umzüge?
We bring a piano dolly, carrying straps and protective blankets, secure the key cover and case, carry the instrument through the stairwell and lash it down in the van. At the destination, we place it in the desired spot. A piano tuner then takes care of the retuning.
How soon can I get an appointment for a piano transport?
A single piano transport can often be scheduled within one to two weeks. If the piano is part of a complete move, we plan it straight into moving day – the lead time for the whole move then applies.
Can I combine several services with a piano transport?
Yes. If the piano is moving along with the rest of your household, we also provide a packing service and assembly service. We also offer house clearance and storage, for example if the instrument needs to be stored temporarily until you move in.
How are my belongings insured during a piano transport?
For a piano, liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) applies, usually 620 euros per cubic metre of load space. Because a good instrument is often worth considerably more, we recommend additional transport insurance for grand pianos and high-quality upright pianos.
