Moving company Berlin Moabit – an island between the Spree and canals

Moabit is literally an island: it is surrounded by the Spree, the Berlin-Spandau Ship Canal, the Westhafen Canal and the Charlottenburg Connecting Canal. Anyone driving in or out has to cross a bridge. You notice this clearly during rush hour. Inside, Moabit is a period-building neighbourhood with Kieze such as the Stephankiez, the Westfälisches Viertel or the area around Lehrter Straße, plus Turmstraße as the main shopping street with the Arminiusmarkthalle.

Bridges and access

Because all routes lead over bridges, traffic quickly backs up at peak times. We therefore plan journey times with a buffer and like to start early. For moves within Moabit this hardly matters, but it does for trips to Charlottenburg, Wedding or Mitte.

Period buildings in the Kiez

Most flats are in period buildings with side wings and rear buildings, often without a lift. Some of the stairwells are beautifully preserved, but narrow. We dismantle large furniture, protect banisters and walls and carry items in parts. Around Turmstraße and Stromstraße, a no-parking zone is strongly recommended.

New builds at the Hauptbahnhof and the Spree

On the edge of Moabit, around the Hauptbahnhof (central station) and along the Spree, many new residential and office buildings have been built. Here there are lifts and underground car parks, but also strict rules on delivery times. We register the move in advance and comply with the management’s requirements.

  • Students and young professionals who want to live close to Mitte
  • Families who have moved into a larger flat within the Kiez

  • For new builds, register moving times with the management
  • Have the courtyard and passageway kept clear
  • Label boxes by room

Costs and money-saving tips

Volume, floor and carrying distances are the main factors, and in Moabit the traffic situation is added. You can save if you sort things out in advance, pack yourself and choose a weekday outside the end of the month. On request, our packing service takes care of the packing if time is short.

Moabit from Turmstraße to Westhafen – neighbourhoods and their peculiarities

Moabit is an island, surrounded by the Spree, the Westhafen Canal, the Berlin-Spandau Ship Canal and the Charlottenburg Connecting Canal. This makes the area special: you can only get in and out via bridges. Within Moabit there are several Kieze with their own character, from the lively centre on Turmstraße to the quiet residential streets in the Westfälisches Viertel.

Turmstraße and Arminiusmarkthalle

Turmstraße is Moabit’s main shopping street. There is a lot of traffic here during the day, with buses and delivery vans stopping constantly. Flats above the shops are often period buildings with large rooms, but little space in front of the door. For a move there, you definitely need a no-parking zone. Around the Arminiusmarkthalle, the streets are somewhat quieter, but also busy at market time.

Beusselkiez and Westfälisches Viertel

In the Beusselkiez there are many period buildings with side wings and rear courtyards, as well as houses from the fifties. The flats are often smaller and the stairwells narrower than on Turmstraße. In the Westfälisches Viertel, near the Spree, it is greener and many houses have front gardens. We adapt the size of the van and the number of helpers to the respective street. Small vans cope better in narrow streets, large vans save trips over long distances.

Around the Westhafen

There is a lot of lorry traffic at the Westhafen and on Beusselstraße. This is a challenge for moves, because the roads are busy and the traffic-light phases are long. We prefer to schedule moves in this area early in the morning, before the rush hour begins. That way we make faster progress.

Authorities, court and offices

Moabit is home to the Criminal Court, several federal authorities and many offices around the Hauptbahnhof. As a result, people who come to Berlin for work and are looking for a flat close to their workplace also move here. For them, the move is often part of a bigger change: new job, new city, new flat. In such cases, we offer a complete package that ranges from packing in the old city to setting up in Moabit.

At the Spreebogen and the Hauptbahnhof

Around the Hauptbahnhof and the Spreebogen, many new flats have been built in recent years. These buildings have underground car parks, lifts and strict house rules. Moves there almost always have to be registered in advance. Some buildings have a fixed delivery area; in others, we have to set up a no-parking zone on the street. We clarify this with the management in advance.

Bridges and roadworks

As Moabit can only be reached via bridges, roadworks on a bridge immediately affect traffic. Before every move, we check which bridges are currently open and whether there are diversions. This sounds like a small detail, but it saves a lot of time on moving day. Anyone moving from Moabit to Charlottenburg, Wedding or Mitte has short distances, provided the right bridge is open.

One more practical tip: many period buildings in Moabit have cellar compartments with wooden slatted partitions that can only be reached via a steep staircase in the courtyard. Clear these compartments before moving day or have the things ready in one place. We are happy to take bicycles from the courtyard or cellar with us – just tell us beforehand how many there are so that we can plan the space in the van.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a move in Berlin-Moabit cost?

In the Beusselkiez and the Stephankiez there are mostly period buildings, in the Westfälisches Viertel quieter residential streets. Costs arise from volume, floor and additional services. An overview is provided under Moving company Berlin costs.

Do I need a no-parking zone in Moabit?

On Turmstraße and around the Arminiusmarkthalle almost always. The side streets are somewhat quieter, but rarely free there either. We apply for the zone – see No-parking zone Berlin.

How early should I book my move in Moabit?

For Moabit we recommend four to eight weeks. Short-notice appointments are often possible during the week.

Do you also pack my household goods for a move in Moabit?

Yes. With our packing service, we pack your household goods, whether a period flat in the Beusselkiez or a new build on the Spree. We bring materials such as boxes and bubble wrap with us.

Do you dismantle and reassemble furniture for a move in Moabit?

Yes. Our assembly service dismantles wardrobes, beds and kitchens and reassembles them in the new flat. In narrow Moabit stairwells, we prefer to dismantle large furniture once more than necessary so that nothing gets caught on walls or banisters.

How are my belongings insured during a move in Moabit?

We are liable for damage according to the rules of the German Commercial Code (HGB), i.e. normally up to 620 euros per cubic metre of load space. For particularly valuable items from your Moabit flat, additional insurance is worthwhile.

How do I get a quote for my move in Moabit?

Call us (030 612 964 73) or use the contact form. Between Turmstraße and the Spree, we quickly find a date for the on-site survey.
