Long-distance move Berlin–Dresden: carefully planned and personally supported

A long-distance move between Berlin and Dresden calls for reliable organisation, transparent communication and experience with longer routes. Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and handles your move to or from Dresden. We coordinate the process from our Berlin office, plan individually and make sure that your furniture arrives safe and sound.

First contact and individual advice

In the first conversation we clarify your wishes, special requirements and difficult access points. You can reach us by phone or email; we are also happy to look at photos or floor plans to estimate the effort realistically.

Planning and preparation

Structured preparation reduces surprises on moving day. We draw up an overview of packing, floors, parking options and special items such as pianos or antiques. On this basis we agree dates and resources with you.

Transport and load securing

During transport we pay attention to professional stowage and sufficient protection for fragile items. Especially on long-distance moves, sturdy packaging and systematic securing are important so that your furnishings come through the journey well.

Professional removal helpers carefully pack moving boxes in a bright Berlin flat, symbolising stress-free preparation.

Arrival, unloading and assembly

At the destination we unload your furniture, carry it into the intended rooms and, on request, take care of assembly. Our work only ends when the most important furniture is in place and you are satisfied.

Overview of services — how we work

  • On-site survey or digital assessment of your requirements
  • Individual quote and scheduling
  • Packing, protective materials and labelling
  • Transport with professional load securing
  • Unloading, carrying in, assembly and final check

Additional services and flexibility

You can choose additional services such as packing help for fragile items, dismantling of furniture or a broom-clean handover. We advise you on which options make sense for your situation.

Moving to Dresden: a short route, many types of housing

Berlin and Dresden are around 195 kilometres apart via the A13. In normal traffic that is a drive of just over two hours for our lorry, so in most cases a move can be completed in one day. We load in Berlin in the morning, set off as soon as everything is secured and unload in Dresden in the afternoon. For a house with a cellar, loft and garage, we plan two days so that nothing happens under time pressure.

Dresden districts at a glance

The Äußere Neustadt is characterised by Gründerzeit buildings with rear courtyards and lots of stairs. In Striesen and Blasewitz there are villas and so-called Kaffeemühlenhäuser (“coffee grinder houses”), small apartment buildings with an almost square floor plan. In Gorbitz or Prohlis, many people live in prefabricated tower blocks with lifts, while in the city centre around the Altstadt there are new buildings with underground car parks. These differences matter to us: they determine how many carriers we need and which vehicle size fits in front of the building.

How we protect your furniture

  • Padded blankets for every piece of furniture, film for sensitive surfaces
  • Mattresses in protective covers
  • Straps for securing the load in the lorry
  • Edge protection for door frames and stairwells where needed

When you are doing more than just moving

Sometimes the move to Dresden coincides with downsizing, for example when the children have moved out. In that case, we can dispose of the furniture that is not coming along right away in Berlin. You can read how this works on the page House Clearance Berlin. For older customers, we also offer a particularly calm process, which we describe under Senior Moves Berlin.

Costs and planning

On a route of under 200 kilometres, staff and working time make up the bulk of the costs. The better prepared the boxes are and the less furniture needs to be dismantled, the cheaper it becomes. An explanation of the individual items can be found under Moving Company Berlin Costs.

After moving to Dresden

Register at the Bürgerbüro (citizens’ office) within two weeks. Remember the mail forwarding order and change your address with your bank, insurers and employer. On request, we take the empty boxes back with us.

Dresden Neustadt: rear courtyards and passageways

In the Äußere Neustadt, many flats are in rear buildings, reached via passageways and courtyards full of bicycles and bins. The streets are lively in the evenings and at weekends. There, we recommend moving dates on weekday mornings and a no-parking zone directly in front of the passageway.

The Elbe and inclines

Dresden is divided by the Elbe, and some districts such as Loschwitz or Weißer Hirsch lie on a slope. Access roads there are sometimes steep and narrow, and not every street is suitable for large vehicles. We clarify access in advance and use a smaller vehicle if necessary.

When it has to be quick

Because the route is short, moves to Dresden can also be planned at short notice. What matters most then is the no-parking zone and packed boxes.

Berlin–Dresden via the A13: how the transport works

From Berlin, Dresden can be reached via the A13 in just over two hours. This makes a long-distance move to Dresden logistically manageable, but not without its particularities. Here we explain the route, the process and the choice of vehicle. Information on arriving in Dresden, on the authorities, residential areas and local costs can be found on the page Moving Berlin Dresden.

Through the Spreewald onto the A13

The route leads from the Schönefeld interchange onto the A13, past the Spreewald and Lusatia to the Dresden-Nord junction. The motorway has two lanes and is lightly used on many sections. Bottlenecks are more likely on the Berlin ring road and on the last few kilometres in Dresden itself, where the approaches over the Elbe bridges get congested at rush hour. We therefore plan our arrival for after the morning traffic where possible.

One day or two?

We can usually move a one- to three-room flat in one day: load in the morning, drive at midday, unload in the afternoon. If you also book our packing service or furniture assembly, we spread the work over two days. On the first day we pack and dismantle, on the second we transport and assemble. This takes the pressure off everyone involved and leaves time for the unexpected.

Vehicles for Dresden’s streets

Besides the Altstadt, Dresden also has hilly residential areas, for example at Weißer Hirsch, in Loschwitz or in parts of the Neustadt with narrow streets. A large lorry is not always the best choice there. We check the destination address in advance and decide whether a 7.5-tonne lorry, a smaller lorry or a combination of lorry and van makes sense. On steep access roads it may be necessary to transfer the load to a small vehicle.

The Elbe factor

Dresden is divided by the Elbe, and the bridges are important bottlenecks. If your new flat is on the other side of the Elbe from the motorway exit, we allow for extra driving time. During floods or events on the riverbanks, roads may be closed. We check the current situation before setting off.

Part load and partial move

Many customers initially move to Dresden with some of their belongings and fetch the rest later, for example because the lease on their Berlin flat runs for a few more weeks. For such partial moves, a part load is practical. We collect the second load at a later date and bring it to Dresden bundled with other consignments.

Securing the load, even on a short route

Even on two hours of motorway, a poorly secured load can shift. We strap furniture down tightly, pad out gaps and put heavy boxes at the bottom. Glasses and crockery travel in special boxes, pictures in picture boxes. That way your household goods arrive in Dresden undamaged.

Updates during the journey

We let you know when we leave Berlin and get in touch again shortly before arriving in Dresden. That way you can be on site in good time, inform the caretaker and open the door to the flat before the team comes up the stairs with the first boxes.
