Convenient, predictable and personal: your long-distance move between Berlin and the Czech Republic

Advice and individual planning

In the initial consultation, we clarify your wishes, special items and access conditions on site. You receive a transparent overview of the possible services and suitable offers for packing, transport and additional services. This avoids surprises and keeps the move predictable.

The process in detail

  1. Preliminary consultation: inventory by phone or in person in Berlin.
  2. Quote: a detailed offer of services based on your requirements.
  3. Preparation: packing, labelling and securing fragile goods.
  4. Execution: coordinated transport with ongoing coordination and advance notice.
  5. Handover: joint inspection at the destination and help with setting up.

Packing and protecting your furniture

Good packing reduces the risk of transport damage. We use proven materials and techniques, secure furniture professionally and offer dismantling and assembly on request. We treat particularly fragile items with additional protective measures so that everything arrives safely.

Transport and communication

During the journey, we keep you informed: we proactively communicate dates, arrival windows and important stages. All processes are coordinated from Berlin, so you have a single point of contact. This keeps the organisation clear and reliable.

Special items and individual wishes

Whether a piano, paintings, bulky furniture or personal collections – we discuss the best solution in advance. We plan special requirements early so that road closures, driveways or narrow stairs do not cause problems. Your specifications are binding for us.

Follow-up and service after arrival

After the handover, we remain available for questions and minor follow-up work. If you would like support with setting up or the final inspection, we coordinate the next steps. Our goal is a clean and satisfactory handover.

Moving Berlin–Czech Republic: Prague in one day

Prague is only around 350 kilometres from Berlin, via the A13 and Dresden and then on along the D8. This makes Prague one of the closest foreign destinations of all. We can move a smaller flat in one day; for larger households, we plan two days. Brno is around 550 kilometres away and Ostrava about 600 – here the move is always a two-day project.

Living in Prague

In the popular districts of Vinohrady, Žižkov, Karlín or Holešovice, there are many period buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The stairwells are often wide, while lifts are small or were installed later. In the Old Town and the Lesser Town (Malá Strana), the lanes are narrow and access restrictions apply to larger vehicles. A permit is usually required to stop for loading and unloading. We clarify with you in advance what access to your new address looks like.

Formalities

  • No customs for household goods within the EU
  • Deregistration at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) in Berlin if you give up your residence
  • Registration of your stay with the Czech authorities within the deadlines applicable there
  • For longer stays, EU citizens can apply for a residence certificate

Working and commuting

Some of our customers do not move completely, but set up a second home in Prague. In that case, a small vehicle with a few pieces of furniture is often enough, or the belongings travel as a part load. For a complete household, we plan a dedicated lorry.

Preparation

Pack boxes completely and label them by room – in German or English, so that helpers on site can also assign them. Important documents such as your ID, employment contract and tenancy agreement belong in your hand luggage. If you do not have time to pack, use our packing service.

Costs

Because the route is comparatively short, the travel costs are lower than those of many long-distance moves within Germany. General explanations can be found under Moving Company Berlin Costs; more on moves abroad under International Moves Berlin.

Brno and Ostrava

In addition to Prague, many of our customers move to Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, or to the region around Ostrava. In both cities there are many period buildings and prefabricated blocks from the socialist era, as well as new residential complexes on the outskirts. Prefabricated blocks usually have a lift, but with small cabins – large furniture has to be dismantled.

Vignette and lorry toll

In the Czech Republic, different toll systems apply to lorries and cars. The costs for our transport are included in the quote. If you follow in your own car, you will usually need an electronic vignette for the motorways.

Short-notice moves

Because the route to Prague is comparatively short, short-notice dates are often possible too. The most important things then are a parking permit at the destination and packed boxes.

Moving to the Czech Republic: Prague, Brno and the border region

The Czech Republic is only a few hours’ drive from Berlin. You can reach Prague in around four to five hours, Brno in a little more. Many Germans move to the Czech Republic for a job, to study or for the quality of life. As it is an EU country, the move is duty-free. Here we explain what you should bear in mind when planning.

The route via Dresden

From Berlin, the route goes via the A13 to Dresden and then via the A17 and the Czech D8 to Prague. In total, it is around 350 kilometres. The D8 runs through the Central Bohemian Uplands and is scenically attractive. In the Czech Republic, an electronic toll applies to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Smaller vans need an electronic vignette. We take care of registering the vehicle correctly.

One day or two

A move to Prague can be done in one day for smaller flats if loading starts early. For larger households, or if furniture assembly is required, we plan two days. Brno, Ostrava or Olomouc are considerably more kilometres away, so two days is the rule there.

Registering your stay

In Berlin, you deregister at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office). In the Czech Republic, EU citizens are required to register if they stay longer than 30 days. Registration takes place with the foreigners’ police or the responsible office of the Ministry of the Interior. Anyone staying longer than three months can apply for a certificate of temporary residence. You should check the exact requirements with the Czech authorities in advance.

Prague period buildings and prefabricated blocks

In central Prague, for example in Vinohrady, Žižkov or Karlín, many people live in Gründerzeit-era buildings with high ceilings and wide stairs. Lifts are not always available. On the outskirts there are large prefabricated housing estates, the so-called paneláky, with lifts and long corridors. The Old Town itself is barely accessible for large lorries. We plan access according to your exact address and use smaller vehicles if necessary.

Language and everyday life

Czech is not easy for native German speakers to learn. In Prague you can get by well with English, less so in smaller towns. In the border region, many people speak some German. A translation is worthwhile for tenancy agreements and official letters.

Costs

A move to the Czech Republic is comparatively inexpensive due to the short distance. The costs depend on volume, floors and additional services. For small volumes, a part load is also an option. More on this on our page International Moves Berlin.

Arriving in the Czech Republic

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and has an excellent public transport network with metro, trams and buses. The Bohemian forests, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and the Moravian vineyards invite you to go on excursions.

If you are taking a car with you, you should find out about the Czech rules for re-registering it. For pets, the EU pet passport with a valid rabies vaccination also applies, so that entry goes smoothly.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pack everything myself beforehand?

No. You can pack yourself or commission our team to do the packing. We offer various options – from a complete package to support with individual areas – tailored to your time and the scope of the move.

How do I get a binding quote?

Contact us for an initial consultation. Once the details have been clarified, we prepare a transparent quote that clearly lists the agreed services and the planned steps.

How much does a move from Berlin to the Czech Republic cost?

Prague is only around 350 kilometres from Berlin, Brno about 550. The price is therefore determined mainly by volume, floors and access – in Prague’s Old Town and in Vinohrady, this is often the most time-consuming part. You receive a fixed price. General cost factors can be found under Moving Company Berlin Costs.

How long does a move from Berlin to the Czech Republic take?

We complete most moves to Prague or Ústí nad Labem in one long day. For Brno, Ostrava or larger households, we plan two days.

How much lead time do I need for a move from Berlin to the Czech Republic?

Four to six weeks of lead time is ideal. In Prague, the parking space in front of the building often requires a permit from the district authority, which must be applied for in good time.

How are my belongings insured during a move from Berlin to the Czech Republic?

Liability under Section 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB) applies to your belongings on the way to the Czech Republic, i.e. 620 euros per cubic metre of required loading space. For glass, porcelain or antiques, additional transport insurance makes sense.

Do I need customs documents for a move from Berlin to the Czech Republic?

No, the Czech Republic is part of the EU, so no customs documents are required. Anyone staying longer than 30 days usually registers their stay with the foreigners’ police. You should not forget to deregister in Berlin either.
