Your long-distance move between Berlin and Denmark
Are you planning a move from Berlin to Denmark or back to Germany? Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and provides expert support for long-distance moves between the two countries. We make sure that your furniture and household goods are packed in a structured way, loaded safely and delivered reliably to their destination, so that you can concentrate on your fresh start.

Our long-distance moving services
As a Berlin removal company, we take care of the complete planning and coordination of your cross-border transport. We advise you on suitable types of packaging, delicate items and the special requirements that an international move involves. Please note: we are based in Berlin and do not operate as a local moving company at the destination in Denmark.
Preparation and survey
Precise preparation is the basis for a smooth process. Together we determine which furniture is coming along, which items need special protection and which access situations have to be considered at the pick-up and delivery addresses. The survey can take place on site in Berlin or virtually, entirely according to your needs.
How your long-distance move works
We work in clear steps so that you always know what happens next. The following list shows the typical process, which we adapt individually to your plans:
- Survey and inventory (on site or digitally)
- Individual consultation and written planning
- Professional packing and assembly work
- Safe loading and transport organisation
- Coordination of delivery and handover at the destination
- Final review and follow-up
Packing and careful protection
Fragile items such as porcelain, art or electronics receive special protective solutions. For furniture, we use shock- and scratch-resistant materials as well as secure fastenings in the vehicle. The aim is to prevent transport damage and make it easier to set everything up again at the destination.

Transport, logistics and handover
For long distances, we choose suitable vehicles and routes geared towards the safe delivery of your belongings. Our teams carry out loading and unloading carefully and document the condition at handover, so that you receive a transparent overview.
Why Lion Umzüge from Berlin
As a Berlin-based company, we offer you local experience with the collection and cross-border expertise in the organisation. We value clear communication, reliable agreements and individual solutions so that your move is predictable and stress-free. Once again: we operate in Berlin and do not act as a local service provider at the destination in Denmark.

Moving Berlin–Denmark: three routes to Copenhagen
Denmark is closer than many people think. There are three routes to Copenhagen: by ferry from Rostock to Gedser, via Puttgarden and Rødby on the Vogelfluglinie (Fehmarn Belt route), or entirely overland via Flensburg and the Great Belt Bridge. With the ferry, it is only around 440 kilometres by road; overland, it is roughly twice as far. Which route suits best depends on the destination: for Copenhagen and Zealand, the ferry is usually cheaper; for Jutland, Aarhus or Aalborg, the overland route.
Schedule
For a small household, a move to Copenhagen can be completed in one long day if the ferry timetable works out. For larger flats, we plan two days. That gives us time to unload calmly and assemble the furniture. We book the ferry space in good time so that the date is secure.
Formalities
- No customs duties for household goods within the EU
- Deregistration at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) in Berlin
- In Denmark, registration and allocation of a CPR number, which you need for doctors, banks and authorities
- Vehicles are subject to their own rules on registration and tax in Denmark – find out in advance
Living in Copenhagen
In the inner districts such as Nørrebro, Østerbro or Vesterbro there are many five-storey period buildings, often without a lift and with narrow stairs. Large furniture often has to be dismantled. Copenhagen is also a cycling city with many cycle lanes where the lorry is not allowed to stop. We therefore clarify in advance where we can park.
What you can prepare yourself
Pack boxes completely and label them legibly. Measure the stairwell and the flat door in Copenhagen and send us the dimensions. Important documents belong in your hand luggage. If time is short, our packing service takes care of the packing.
Costs
For Denmark, the costs are made up of staff, vehicle, ferry or bridge tolls and fuel. How we calculate prices in general is explained under Moving company Berlin costs. An overview of all destinations abroad can be found on the page International moves Berlin; if you are moving further north, read on at Moving Berlin–Sweden.
Moving to Denmark: short distances, CPR number and Danish composure
Denmark is close, easy to reach and an attractive destination for many Germans. Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense offer jobs in industry, research and design, and the country is considered relaxed and family-friendly. As an EU country, the move is free of customs duties. Nevertheless, there are a few special features you should know about.
Ferry or overland
From Berlin to Copenhagen it is around 450 kilometres via the Rostock–Gedser ferry, which takes about two hours. Alternatively, the overland route leads via Hamburg, Flensburg and the bridges across the Great Belt and the Øresund, which is longer. To Aarhus or Odense, we usually drive via Hamburg and Jutland. A toll is payable on the Great Belt Bridge. We choose the most economical route depending on destination, season and ferry timetable. Many moves to Denmark can be completed in one or two days.
The CPR number
In Berlin, you deregister at the Bürgeramt. In Denmark, you register with the municipality (the kommune) and receive a CPR number. You need this personal identification number for your bank, doctor, work and almost every aspect of daily life. EU citizens staying longer than three months also need a registration certificate. Find out about the exact procedures in advance, because without a CPR number much of everyday life in Denmark is difficult.
Living in Denmark
Copenhagen flats are often located in older apartment buildings with steep stairs and no lift. In Denmark, furniture is traditionally carried through the stairwell; for very large items, a furniture lift is also used. In the countryside there are many detached houses with large plots. Many Danes live in cooperative housing, whose rules for moves you should ask about in advance.
Bicycles and mobility
Denmark is a cycling country. In Copenhagen, many people use their bike for almost every journey, including cargo bikes and child trailers. We are happy to take your bikes along. If you are bringing a car, you should find out about Danish registration and the high registration tax, as this can be considerable.
Holiday home and second residence
Many Germans own a holiday home in Denmark. Special rules apply to foreigners when buying holiday homes. If you want to bring furniture to a holiday home, this is a normal transport without customs formalities.
Costs
The costs depend on distance, ferry fare or bridge toll, volume and additional services. For small quantities, a shared load is often the cheapest solution. More on this on our page International moves Berlin.
Settling in Denmark
Danes value cosiness, known in Danish as hygge. Candles, good food and time with friends play a big role. A Danish course makes integration easier, even though many Danes speak very good English.
Working in Denmark, living in Germany
Many people live in Schleswig-Holstein and work in Denmark, or vice versa. If you initially live in Flensburg and later move to Denmark, you only have a short move ahead of you. Special rules on taxes, social insurance and child benefit apply to cross-border commuters. Get advice on this before you move your place of residence. The Familienkasse (family benefits office) and the Danish authorities should also be informed about the move.

We coordinate the transport and handover right up to the destination. As a Berlin-based company, we organise the delivery and hand over your belongings on site; we do not offer a local presence in Denmark. On request, we give advice on further organisation at the destination.
How much does a move from Berlin to Denmark cost?
To Copenhagen, it is only around 440 kilometres with the Rostock–Gedser ferry; overland via Flensburg it is considerably further. The ferry ticket for the lorry, diesel and possibly an overnight stay are added to volume and floors. You receive a fixed price after the survey. General cost factors under Moving company Berlin costs.
How long does a move from Berlin to Denmark take?
To Copenhagen or elsewhere on Zealand, we can often complete a smaller move in one day if the morning ferry fits. For Aarhus, Odense or larger households, we plan two days.
How much lead time do I need for a move from Berlin to Denmark?
Four to six weeks’ lead time is usually sufficient. In July, when half of Germany heads to Scandinavia with a caravan, you should book earlier so that the lorry gets a place on the ferry.

On the route to Denmark, including the ferry crossing, we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB), usually with 620 euros per cubic metre of loading space. Designer furniture or art is best insured additionally.

No, Denmark is an EU member, so you do not need customs documents for your household goods. After the move, you usually apply for a registration certificate and register with the municipality (Borgerservice) to receive your CPR number.
