What is a removal and haulage company? The short answer

A removal and haulage company (in German: Umzugsspedition) transports household goods and office furniture and organises the move for you. Legally, you conclude a removal contract under sections 451 et seq. of the German Commercial Code (HGB), a special form of freight contract. In everyday German, the terms Umzugsspedition, Möbelspedition, Umzugsfirma and Umzugsunternehmen usually mean the same thing: a service provider that collects your furniture, drives it safely and sets it up again in your new home. Lion Umzüge is based at Thyssenstraße 7-17, 13407 Berlin, and works in all districts and nationwide.

Removal company, haulage company or freight forwarder: what is the difference?

The term Spedition (freight forwarding) comes from the goods transport sector. If you would like to know more about its meaning, the Wikipedia article Freight forwarder gives a good overview. For your move, what matters is the kind of company behind the name.

Freight forwarding in goods transport

A classic freight forwarder organises the carriage of goods such as pallets, general cargo or containers for trade and industry. Loading takes place at ramps and in warehouses, not on the fourth floor of an old apartment building. The forwarder often hires other carriers for the actual journey. For furniture that has to be carried, padded and reassembled, this is not the right choice.

Removal company for moving day

A removal company focuses on the work on site: dismantling furniture, carrying boxes, protecting stairwells, loading the truck and putting everything in the right place in the new home. In Berlin this also includes no-parking zones, narrow courtyards and old buildings without a lift.

Removal and haulage company: both from one source

The removal and haulage company, traditionally called a furniture removal company, combines both. It plans long distances, takes care of storage and scheduling, and does the physical work on moving day itself. In the end, the name matters less to you than the question of who actually turns up at your door, who is liable and whether the agreed price applies. You should be clear about this before booking.

Services of our removal and haulage company in Berlin

Local moves within Berlin

Most jobs take place within the city, from an old building in Friedrichshain to a terraced house in Reinickendorf. We check the floor, lift, carrying distance and parking situation in advance and, if you wish, apply for a no-parking zone so that the truck can stand close to the entrance. This keeps moving day predictable, even on a narrow street.

Long-distance moves throughout Germany

Anyone leaving Berlin or moving to the capital needs a removal company that organises long distances safely. For a long-distance move from Berlin we drive with our own team. We can usually cover distances of up to around 600 kilometres in one day; for larger households we plan two days. As a guide, a move from Berlin to Hamburg costs from 600 € to 1,400 €, to Munich from 900 € to 2,200 €.

Storage between moving out and moving in

The moving-out date does not always match the moving-in date. If your new home is not yet available or is being renovated, we take care of storing your furniture and boxes, for a short time or longer. You can find more details under storage in Berlin.

Furniture transport and single items

Not every job is a complete move. A new sofa, an inherited wardrobe or a bed for a shared flat: for cases like these we offer our furniture transport in Berlin. Two helpers with a truck cost from 60 € to 90 € per hour, and most single-item jobs within the city take two to three hours.

Packing, dismantling and reassembly

If you wish, we pack the entire household or provide you with suitable materials so that you can pack yourself. We dismantle wardrobes, beds and shelves, pad them for transport and reassemble them at the destination. Pictures, glass and electronics receive special protection.

How much does a removal company in Berlin cost?

A move within Berlin costs from 250 € to 400 € for a 1-room flat and from 1,400 € to 3,000 € for a house. The exact price depends on the volume, the floors at both addresses, the lift and carrying distance, the distance between the addresses and extra services such as packing, assembly or storage. After the survey you receive a written fixed-price quote so that you can plan with confidence. A detailed overview of all items can be found on our page moving company Berlin costs.

Flat size Guide price for a move in Berlin
1 room from 250 € to 400 €
2 rooms from 400 € to 750 €
3 rooms from 650 € to 1,100 €
4 rooms from 950 € to 1,600 €
5+ rooms / house from 1,400 € to 3,000 €

How to keep costs down

Every box that stays behind saves time and loading space. So before the survey, sort out what you want to sell, give away or dispose of. You can easily pack books, clothes and small items yourself. If you are a little flexible with the date and do not have to move at the end of the month, you also have more choice.

Insurance and liability for your move

Moves in Germany are subject to statutory liability. Under section 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB), the removal company is generally liable for loss of or damage to the goods up to 620 euros per cubic metre of loading space required for the transport. For 30 cubic metres, this means an upper limit of 18,600 euros for the entire household. For very valuable single items such as antiques, art or a piano, the actual value may be higher. In that case additional transport insurance makes sense, which we discuss with you before the move.

Check your furniture after unloading. Visible damage should be reported at delivery or at the latest on the following day; damage that is not immediately visible within 14 days (section 451f HGB). The easiest way is to note anything unusual during the joint final walk-through.

What to look for when choosing a removal company

Anyone looking for a removal company in Berlin will find plenty of offers. A few points help you recognise reputable providers and compare prices fairly.

A survey instead of a flat rate over the phone

A reliable price requires the provider to know your belongings. Reputable companies look at your home or ask for photos and measurements before making an offer. A flat price quoted without any questions often leads to extra charges on moving day.

A written quote with clearly listed services

Make sure the quote states exactly what is included: number of helpers, vehicle, packing, dismantling and reassembly, no-parking zone, travel and any surcharges. Only then can several quotes really be compared.

Availability and a fixed contact person

Questions almost always come up before a move, for example about a wardrobe that will not fit through the door or a postponed handover date. A removal company with fixed business hours and a contact person who knows your job saves you a lot of coordination at this stage.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a removal and haulage company and a removal company?

In everyday use both terms usually mean the same. A removal and haulage company places more emphasis on organising transport, long distances and storage; a removal company on the work on moving day. Lion Umzüge does both.

How much does a removal company in Berlin cost?

Within Berlin a move costs from 250 € to 400 € for 1 room, from 400 € to 750 € for 2 rooms, from 650 € to 1,100 € for 3 rooms and from 950 € to 1,600 € for 4 rooms. You receive the fixed price after the free survey.
