Why Lion Umzüge from Berlin?

As a Berlin company, we bring our local experience from the capital to the planning of your long-distance move. Our strength lies in structured preparation, careful packing and transparent coordination with you. Important: we work from Berlin and are not a local removal company at the destination in Dortmund.

Our process for a long-distance move

A clear process creates security. So that you always know which steps are coming up, we work according to a proven process that we adapt to your individual needs.

  1. Initial consultation and on-site survey: recording the scope of the move and special requirements.
  2. Planning and quote: detailed coordination of services and materials.
  3. Proper packing: protection of furniture and fragile items with suitable materials.
  4. Safe transport: loading, load securing and professional stowing in the vehicle.
  5. Unloading and handover: checking against the inventory list and a final review on site.

Practical preparation tips for you

Good preparation shortens the processes on site: label boxes by room, make space for loading and unloading and set aside items that are not coming along in good time. We will be happy to give you tips on materials and optimal preparation.

From Berlin to the Ruhr area: planning your move to Dortmund

At around 490 kilometres via the A2, the Berlin–Dortmund route is easy to drive, but it is one of the busiest lorry routes in Germany. Roadworks and traffic jams around Hanover and Bielefeld are the rule rather than the exception. We therefore plan in a buffer and agree with you whether unloading should take place the same evening or at a relaxed pace the next morning. For smaller households with an early start, both are possible in one day; for a detached house, we recommend two days.

Living in Dortmund – what matters when moving in

Dortmund is diverse: Gründerzeit buildings in the Kreuzviertel, post-war blocks in the Nordstadt, former colliery estates with small terraced houses and new-build areas at Phoenix-See. Each of these types of housing brings different requirements. In period buildings, there are narrow stairwells and high floors without a lift; in terraced houses, narrow stairs to the upper floor; in new builds, underground car parks and lifts that should be reserved in advance. Tell us these details during the on-site survey and we will plan staff and materials accordingly.

What we take care of for your move to Dortmund

  • On-site survey in Berlin and a written fixed-price quote
  • Dismantling and reassembly of furniture, including the kitchen on request
  • Padding and securing delicate furniture for the long journey
  • Boxes and packing material, a complete packing service on request
  • Disposal of furniture that is not coming along

Keeping an eye on costs

The less you take with you, the smaller the vehicle and the lower the price. So sort things out before the on-site survey – what you no longer need does not have to be driven 490 kilometres. We explain how moving costs are made up on the Moving company Berlin costs page. For individual pieces of furniture, a part load is often the more economical choice. You can find further destinations in the west in the Long-distance move Berlin overview.

Moving day

In the morning, the team in Berlin starts dismantling the furniture and loading. Heavy items such as wardrobes and the washing machine go into the lorry first, then boxes and finally delicate items, which we unload first in Dortmund. During the journey, we can be reached by phone and let you know when we are approaching the destination. At the new home, we carry everything into the agreed rooms and reassemble the furniture. Finally, we go through the flat together with you so that nothing is overlooked.

After moving in

In Dortmund, you register with the citizens’ service office (Bürgerdienst) within two weeks. Also take care of mail forwarding and re-registering your car. On request, we take empty boxes back with us.

From Berlin to the Ruhr area: transport planning for Dortmund

Dortmund lies on the eastern edge of the Ruhr area and can be reached from Berlin via the A2. The two cities are around 490 kilometres apart. This page explains how we organise the transport. What you should bear in mind when arriving in Dortmund, such as registration, districts and costs, is summarised on the Move Berlin Dortmund page.

One motorway, many roadworks

The A2 connects Berlin and Dortmund without a detour. However, it is one of the most important freight corridors in Europe. Between Hanover and Bielefeld and in the Kamen area, there are regular roadworks and traffic jams. We therefore reckon with five to six hours of driving time and plan in a buffer. At the Kamener Kreuz interchange, the A1 and A2 meet – a well-known bottleneck that we try to pass outside peak times.

One long day or two normal ones

A small move to Dortmund can be done in one long day if loading starts early and the drive goes smoothly. For a normal flat, we recommend two days. On the first day, loading takes place; on the second day, we set off early and unload in Dortmund in the afternoon. This way we avoid the team having to carry heavy furniture up to the third floor after a long drive.

Ruhr cities in turn

Many customers do not move to Dortmund city centre, but to neighbouring towns such as Lünen, Unna, Schwerte or Castrop-Rauxel. These destinations are all within reach of the A2 and A1, and we plan the route accordingly. For us it makes hardly any difference whether the destination is in Dortmund-Hörde or in Unna. All that matters is that we know the exact address early on.

Part load for small quantities

For a room in a shared flat, a few pieces of furniture or a small household, a part load is often the cheapest solution. Your belongings are collected within a time window and taken west together with other consignments. Students who are moving to TU Dortmund or the University of Applied Sciences in particular like to use this option.

Securing the load for the motorway

There is a lot of braking and accelerating on the A2. A load that is not properly secured slides back and forth. We work with tension straps, load bars and blankets. Heavy items such as washing machines or wardrobes stand against the front wall of the cargo area, lighter boxes on top of and behind them. That way everything stays in place.

Collieries, stadium and residential areas

Dortmund has densely built-up districts such as the Kreuzviertel or the Nordstadt, but also sprawling estates. On match days, traffic around the stadium in the south of the city is severely restricted. If your moving date falls on a home match day and the destination is nearby, we should know. We will then plan an earlier arrival or suggest another date.

Contact during the journey

We get in touch when we leave Berlin and in good time before arriving in Dortmund. This allows you to unlock the flat, inform the caretaker and assign the rooms for the team.
