Your long-distance move between Berlin and Austria: safe and transparent
Planning & advice
To begin with, we determine your requirements together: inventory, special items, access situations and preferred dates. On the basis of this information, you receive a clear plan covering every step from packing to handover. You get one clear contact person who explains the steps and coordinates dates.
Packing & protection
Fragile furniture, glass, pictures or technical equipment need individual protection. We explain which materials make sense and offer either professional packing or deliver the right packing material to you. If required, we coordinate the dismantling and reassembly of delicate items.
Transport & support
During transport, we attach great importance to secure lashing and gentle handling of the goods. During the journey we keep you informed of the status and agree the loading and unloading procedures with you. For special items, we develop additional securing solutions so that everything arrives safely at its destination.

How your long-distance move works
- Initial consultation and survey to record your requirements
- Individual planning with a clear description of services
- Delivery of packing material or professional packing on site

Moving from Berlin to Austria: what you should know
For many people, a move to Austria hardly feels like moving abroad: the same language, an EU member state, no customs formalities for your household goods. Nevertheless, there are differences compared with a journey within Germany. The distances are long – it is around 680 kilometres to Vienna, about 720 to Salzburg, and even more to Innsbruck or Graz – and Austria has its own toll and driving rules for lorries, which we take into account in our planning.
Route and schedule
To Vienna, the route usually runs via Dresden and Prague or via Nuremberg and Passau. Western Austria is reached via Munich. We always plan such moves over at least two days. On the first day we load in Berlin, on the second day we unload at the destination. For destinations in the Alps, extra time may be needed in winter if snow and ice slow the journey down.
Formalities for a move within the EU
- Deregistration at the Bürgeramt in Berlin if you are giving up your residence in Germany
- Registration of your new residence in Austria within the local deadline
- For a longer stay as an EU citizen, usually applying for a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung)
- Vehicle: re-registration according to Austrian rules, usually within a few months
You can find out the exact deadlines from the responsible municipality or the Magistrat (municipal authority) in Austria.
Living in Vienna and elsewhere
In Vienna there are many Gründerzeit buildings with high-ceilinged rooms, often with a lift, but also with small cabins. Council housing (Gemeindebauten) and new buildings usually have better access. In Salzburg, Innsbruck or smaller towns, access roads are sometimes narrow or steep. Stopping and loading zones in Austria are applied for from the relevant authority; we discuss with you in good time what is needed at the destination.
Costs
For a move to Austria, tolls, fuel and overnight stays are added to staff and vehicle costs. Each item is listed separately in the quote. A general explanation of the cost factors can be found under Moving Company Berlin Costs. You can read more about our international moves on the page International Removals Berlin; if you are moving on into the Alps, you will also find advice on the page Moving Berlin–Switzerland.
If you move in later
If the start of your tenancy in Austria does not match your move-out date in Berlin, we store your furniture temporarily – details under Storage Berlin.
Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz
Outside Vienna, destinations in Austria are often shaped by the mountains. In Salzburg and Innsbruck, the old towns are narrow and partly closed to traffic, and houses on the outskirts are often on a slope. Graz has many period buildings with inner courtyards. For every address, we clarify how close the lorry can get.
Lorry driving bans
In Austria, heavy lorries are subject to driving bans at weekends and on public holidays and, on some routes, at night. We plan the transport so that it takes place outside these times. We therefore usually schedule your delivery date on a working day.
Viennese period flats
Viennese period buildings often have high ceilings and wide staircases, but lifts that were retrofitted and are small. We therefore often carry large furniture up the stairs.
Moving to Austria: route, registration requirements and everyday life after arrival
For many Berliners, Austria is an obvious destination: the same language, an EU member state, good jobs in Vienna, Graz, Linz or Salzburg. Nevertheless, a move across the border is more than a long domestic move. Here we describe what you should know, from the route to registering in your new municipality.
The route to Vienna, Salzburg or Graz
To Vienna, the route usually runs via Dresden and Prague or via Nuremberg and Passau; to Salzburg and Innsbruck via Munich. Depending on the destination, it is 550 to 850 kilometres. For a lorry, this usually means two days. In Austria, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are subject to a distance-based toll that is charged via a box in the vehicle. There are also night-time driving bans for heavy lorries on some routes. We plan the route and driving times so that these rules are observed.
Deregistering in Berlin, registering in Austria
If you move your residence abroad, you must deregister at the Berlin Bürgeramt. In Austria there is a registration requirement: within three days of moving in, your main residence must be registered at the registration office of the municipality or the Magistrat. As an EU citizen, you also need a registration certificate if you are staying for more than three months. You can find out exactly which documents are required from the responsible local authority.
No customs, but good preparation
As Germany and Austria are both part of the EU, no customs duties are payable on your household goods. Nevertheless, you should draw up a list of your belongings. It helps with planning, with insurance matters and if any questions arise on the way. For pets, the EU pet passport with a valid rabies vaccination applies.
Viennese period buildings and Alpine houses
In Vienna, many people live in Gründerzeit buildings with high rooms and wide stairwells, but not always with a lift. In the Alpine regions, access roads to houses are often steep and narrow. For such destinations, we use smaller vehicles for the last few kilometres if necessary. No-parking zones in Austria are applied for from the municipality or the Magistrat. We take care of this if you give us the address in good time.
What you should take care of yourself
Cancel or transfer contracts in Germany, inform your health insurance provider and check how you will be insured in Austria. You must register your car in Austria after a certain period. Your bank, the tax office and your employer need your new address. A mail forwarding order with Deutsche Post can also be set up to an address abroad.
Keeping an eye on costs
The costs depend on distance, volume, floors at both addresses and additional services. For small quantities, a part load is cheaper than a dedicated lorry. You can find out more about the options on our page International Removals Berlin.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
How are formalities and arrangements handled for a cross-border move?
We explain common formalities and give advice on which documents and information are usually required. Specific official requirements can vary depending on the situation; we support you with information and check together which steps make sense so that the process remains predictable for you.
Who is my contact person at the destination in Austria?
Lion Umzüge organises and manages your move from Berlin. On site, we coordinate the unloading and handover with you, but we do not present ourselves as a local removal company at the destination. If you would like to name a local contact person, we clarify the details with this person in advance so that the arrival runs smoothly.
How much does a move from Berlin to Austria cost?
It is around 680 kilometres to Vienna, and considerably more to Salzburg or Innsbruck. Besides the volume, the price is determined by the route, the vignette and tolls for the lorry, and the team’s overnight stays. You receive a fixed price after the survey. General cost factors are explained on the page Moving Company Berlin Costs.
How long does a move from Berlin to Austria take?
To Vienna or Linz, we can usually complete a move in two days: loading and departure in Berlin, delivery the next day. For destinations in Tyrol or Vorarlberg, we plan an additional day because of the longer route.
How much notice do I need for a move from Berlin to Austria?
For a move to Austria, six to eight weeks’ notice is ideal. This leaves time for the flat handover in Berlin and for arrangements with the property management in Vienna or Graz. We are still happy to look at short-notice enquiries.
How are my belongings insured during a move from Berlin to Austria?
On the way to Austria, the statutory liability of 620 euros per cubic metre of loading space applies (Section 451e of the German Commercial Code, HGB). For art or heirlooms, this amount is often not enough – in that case additional insurance makes sense.
Do I need customs papers for a move from Berlin to Austria?
No, Austria is part of the EU, so customs papers are generally not required for your household goods. But remember to deregister in Berlin and to register in Austria with the registration form (Meldezettel) within three days of moving in.
