Expert support for your long-distance move to or from Bulgaria

Individual advice and inventory

To begin with, we have a detailed conversation to understand your wishes and circumstances. We clarify which furniture and boxes are travelling, which items are fragile and what the access situation is at the pick-up and destination addresses.

Packing, protection and proper transport

The right protection determines the condition of your belongings on arrival. We discuss suitable packing materials, special packaging for fragile items and secure stowage in the vehicle. Your property is handled with care.

A transparent process: step by step

A clearly structured process gives you security. We coordinate dates, organise the transport and keep you regularly informed about progress. We discuss all the necessary details in advance so that everything runs smoothly on moving day.

  • Preliminary discussion and inventory on site or by video
  • Individual quote and scheduling
  • Professional packing and labelling of your goods
  • Door-to-door transport with coordinated delivery
  • Acceptance and handover of the furniture at the destination

Communication and coordination across borders

Clear coordination is crucial for international relocations. We keep you informed about dates, loading and any intermediate stops. As a Berlin company, we take care of the entire organisation; local work in Bulgaria is not carried out by a branch of our own on site.

Flexibility for special requirements

Whether narrow stairwells, bulky furniture or delicate collections – we develop practical solutions and explain the possible options. Together we decide on the best approach so that your move is safe and efficient.

Moving Berlin–Bulgaria: from the Spree to the Black Sea

From Berlin it is around 1,700 kilometres to Sofia, about 1,850 to Plovdiv and over 2,000 kilometres to Varna or Burgas on the Black Sea coast. The route runs through the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Austria, Hungary and Romania or Serbia. With the drivers’ rest periods, the transport is on the road for several days. We plan such moves with fixed loading and delivery dates.

Typical moves to Bulgaria

Many of our customers return to their home country after years in Berlin. Others move to the coast or the mountains in retirement. In both cases, the question of what to take is important. Houses in Bulgaria are often already furnished, and some large Berlin furniture does not fit into the new rooms. What stays in Berlin, we can dispose of – see house clearance Berlin.

Formalities

  • No customs duty on household goods within the EU – transit papers are needed when driving through Serbia
  • Deregistration at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) in Berlin
  • Registration of residence according to Bulgarian rules
  • Clarify re-registration of your vehicle

Access

In Sofia many people live in large apartment blocks with small lifts. In mountain villages and on the coast, roads are sometimes narrow or steep. Photos of the access help us plan the vehicle size and any transfer to a smaller vehicle.

Full lorry or part load?

For a large household, a dedicated transport is worthwhile. If only part of the household is coming along, a part load saves considerable costs.

Costs

We explain how a moving price is generally made up on the page moving company Berlin costs. You can find other countries we drive to under international moves Berlin.

Border crossings and waiting times

Depending on the route, the way to Bulgaria leads through countries inside and outside the EU. At some border crossings there can be long waiting times for lorries, especially before public holidays and in the holiday season. We therefore plan in buffers and choose the route so that the transport arrives as reliably as possible. We confirm your delivery date as soon as the lorry is on its way.

Heat, cold and packing

In summer it gets very hot inland and on the coast, and in winter the mountains can be covered in snow. That is why we pack wooden furniture and electronics particularly carefully. You should transport candles, medicines and perishable food yourself.

An inventory list, just in case

Even though there is no customs duty within the EU, an inventory list is a good idea. It helps with checking on arrival and is required anyway when passing through non-EU countries.

The route from Berlin to Bulgaria in detail

By road it is around 1,700 kilometres from Berlin to Sofia, and a little more to Varna or Burgas on the Black Sea coast. For a lorry carrying household goods, this usually means three days of driving, because driving and rest times must be observed. The route usually runs through the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. After that there are two options: via Romania and the Danube bridge at Vidin or Ruse, or via Serbia. The route via Serbia is often shorter, but leaves the EU and re-enters it. That means additional checks and paperwork. We choose the route according to the destination, the season and the current situation at the borders, and tell you in advance what arrival time you can expect.

Sofia, Plovdiv and the coast

In Sofia many people live in large apartment blocks from the sixties to the eighties. The lifts there are often small, and not every building has one. In newer residential complexes on the outskirts it is different, but the access roads are sometimes not yet fully built. Plovdiv has an old town with steep, cobbled lanes that no large lorry can enter. On the coast around Varna and Burgas there are many holiday complexes that are now lived in all year round. In summer the roads there are busy and loading zones are hard to get. If you send us photos of the house and the access road, we will plan the right vehicle and, if necessary, a smaller van for the last stretch.

Registration and everyday life

Bulgaria has been fully part of the Schengen area since 2025 and has introduced the euro. EU citizens who stay longer than three months are required to obtain a residence certificate from the responsible migration authority. A personal number is issued for many official procedures, contracts and bank accounts. Before that, you deregister at the Bürgeramt in Berlin. Many forms are only available in Bulgarian and in Cyrillic script. It helps to have important documents translated in advance or to have someone on site who speaks the language.

Returning home

A large proportion of our jobs to Bulgaria come from people who have lived in Berlin for a long time and are moving back to their families. Often it is not a whole household, but selected furniture, keepsakes and appliances that are needed in the family home. For this, a part load is often the cheaper solution compared with a lorry of your own. Your belongings then travel together with other consignments towards south-eastern Europe. The delivery date is a little more flexible, but several customers share the costs of the long route.

Pets and vehicle

Within the EU, dogs and cats travel with a pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. Anyone moving to Bulgaria permanently must register their car there after a certain period. Find out in advance which documents the registration office requires, and take the original German vehicle documents with you. It is best to carry valuables, ID documents and important medicines yourself rather than in the lorry.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What preparation is useful on your part?

Start sorting out your belongings in good time, draw up an inventory list and label boxes by content and priority. Let us know about bulky or particularly fragile items so that we can plan materials and equipment accordingly.

How is the transport between the countries organised?

We plan the transport from start to finish and coordinate pick-up and delivery with you. Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and takes care of the entire organisation; please note that we do not represent or replace a local removal company in Bulgaria.

How much does a move from Berlin to Bulgaria cost?

It is around 1,600 kilometres to Sofia, and a few hundred more to Varna or Burgas on the Black Sea coast. Diesel, tolls in several countries and overnight stays make up a large part of the price. For smaller quantities, a part load is often cheaper. General information under moving company Berlin costs.

How long does a move from Berlin to Bulgaria take?

To Sofia we expect three to four days, to Varna or Burgas four to five days from loading to delivery.

How much notice do I need for a move from Berlin to Bulgaria?

Six to eight weeks of notice is ideal. In high summer the routes to the Black Sea coast are very busy – spring and autumn are more relaxed.

How are my belongings insured during a move from Berlin to Bulgaria?

On the long route to Bulgaria, the German Commercial Code (HGB) limits our liability to 620 euros for every cubic metre occupied. For a piano or expensive technology, we discuss additional insurance in advance.

Do I need customs papers for a move from Berlin to Bulgaria?

No, Bulgaria is part of the EU, so customs papers are not required for household goods. Anyone staying longer than three months usually applies to the migration authority for a residence certificate for EU citizens.
