Why Lion Umzüge from Berlin for your move
As a Berlin-based company, we plan and manage your move from here. We do not claim to be a company operating locally at the destination; instead, we take care of organisation and execution from a Berlin perspective. This way you keep one central contact and clear lines of communication.
Individual planning, tailored to you
Every household is different. That is why we discuss your wishes, check access and special features and draw up a detailed plan. On this basis, we determine the order of work, the materials needed and the specific protective measures.
How your long-distance move works
- Initial consultation and on-site survey or digital walkthrough to record all requirements
- Preparation of an individual service plan with clear work packages
- Professional packing and protection of fragile items
- Safe transport and responsible load securing
- Unloading, assembly and handover at your new home
Safe transport and careful handling
We make sure to use suitable packing and securing materials and handle your furniture and belongings with care. Fragile pieces receive extra protection so that they complete the journey without damage.
Service from Berlin — personal and transparent
You get a dedicated contact person from our Berlin office who takes over coordination and accompanies you through all phases. Clear agreements and regular updates are standard for us, so that you always know where things stand.

Additional services as required
In addition to packing and transport, we offer assembly work, furniture setup and special handling solutions for fragile or unusual items on request. Tell us your requirements; we will integrate the services you want into your schedule.
Moving Berlin–Essen: from the north to Lake Baldeney
Essen is around 530 kilometres from Berlin, reachable via the A2 and the motorway network of the Ruhr area. We usually plan the move over two days. This gives us time at the destination to unload carefully and assemble the furniture, instead of working under time pressure in the evening.
Essen is divided in two – including when it comes to housing
The city has very different faces. In the north, in districts such as Altenessen or Katernberg, former mining estates and apartment buildings characterise the scene. In the south, for example in Rüttenscheid, Bredeney or Werden, there are period buildings, villas and detached houses, some on slopes down to the Ruhr and Lake Baldeney. Rüttenscheid is densely built-up and popular, and parking spaces are scarce. In Werden, some streets are narrow and steep. We take all of this into account when planning vehicles and staff.
What you should mention during the survey
- Floor and lift at the new address
- Whether the street is narrow, steep or difficult to access
- Particularly heavy or valuable items
- Whether the kitchen is coming with you
- Whether you would like help with packing
Kitchen and furniture assembly
When moving to the Ruhr area, many customers take their fitted kitchen with them. We dismantle it in Berlin, transport it safely and reassemble it in Essen, provided it fits the new room. More under kitchen assembly Berlin. We also dismantle and reassemble wardrobes, beds and shelves – see assembly service Berlin.
Costs
The price is made up of staff, vehicle, distance, overnight stay and additional services. You can find an explanation on the page moving company Berlin costs.
After moving in
Within two weeks, register at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) of the city of Essen. Remember to set up mail forwarding and re-register your car.
Essen as a place to work
Essen is home to large companies in energy, retail and services and is an important university location. Many people who move from Berlin to Essen come for a new job. If your employer pays for the move, a written quote with itemised positions is usually required – our fixed-price quote is structured exactly like that.
Living between the Ruhr and the Emscher
Rüttenscheid and Holsterhausen are densely built-up and popular, and parking spaces outside the door are rare there. In the south, in Bredeney, Kettwig or Werden, there are more houses with gardens, but also steep streets. In the north, flats are often cheaper and access is easier. Tell us where you are going and we will plan accordingly.
Applying for a parking restriction
Apply to the city for the parking restriction zone in Essen early. Processing usually takes from a few days to a few weeks.
Essen: moving to the green city in the Ruhr area
Essen has transformed from a mining location into a green city and was European Green Capital in 2017. The city is home to major corporations, has a university and a lively cultural scene with the Zollverein World Heritage Site. Anyone moving from Berlin to Essen will find many types of housing, from trendy neighbourhoods to villas on Lake Baldeney. This section is about the move and settling in.
Route and procedure
The journey leads via the A2 into the Ruhr area and on via the A52, A40 or A42 to Essen. It is around 530 kilometres from Berlin. We usually plan two days: loading in Berlin on the first day, driving and unloading in Essen on the second. The A40, often called the Ruhrschnellweg in the Ruhr area, is very busy at rush hour, so we choose the arrival time carefully.
Registering in Essen
In Essen, you register at one of the city’s Bürgerämter (citizens’ offices). There are locations in the city centre and in the districts. The deadline is two weeks after moving in. You need your ID and the landlord’s confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
North and south
Essen is marked by a divide between north and south. In the south lie Rüttenscheid, Bredeney, Werden and Kettwig with period buildings, villas and proximity to Lake Baldeney. Rüttenscheid is popular with young people, with restaurants and cafés on Rüttenscheider Straße. In the north, for example in Katernberg or Altenessen, there are colliery estates and cheaper flats. The choice of district affects the move: villas mean long carrying distances and lots of household goods, estate houses mean narrow stairs.
Rüttenscheid and parking
In Rüttenscheid, the streets are narrow and parking spaces scarce. A parking restriction in front of the new flat is usually necessary. It is applied for with the city of Essen. We take care of it so that the van can stop right outside the door.
Employers and moving costs
Many people moving to Essen come for a job at one of the large companies. These often cover part of the moving costs or pay a lump sum. Clarify this before accepting a quote. We prepare a detailed quote that you can submit to your employer.
Costs at a glance
The costs depend on volume, floors, carrying distances and additional services. For a two-day move, driving time and the team’s overnight stay are added. If you are flexible with the date or have only a little furniture, you can save with a part load. Information on the options can be found on our page long-distance move Berlin.
Arriving in Essen
Essen has a dense network of underground, tram and S-Bahn lines. The Grugapark, Lake Baldeney and the Ruhr heights offer plenty of green space. The Zollverein colliery is not only a World Heritage Site but also a popular place for walks, concerts and exhibitions. Take time after the move to discover the city.
One more tip: anyone moving to Kettwig or Werden lives in Essen, but quite a distance from the centre. The Ruhr and its steep banks shape the streets there, and some access roads are narrow.
