Moving from Berlin to Hungary: Budapest and more
Budapest is around 870 kilometres from Berlin, usually via Dresden, Prague, Brno and Bratislava. The route is well developed and runs exclusively through EU countries. We usually plan a move to Budapest over two days. Destinations at Lake Balaton or in eastern Hungary, such as Debrecen, are further away and take correspondingly longer.
Living in Budapest
In Budapest there are many large period buildings with courtyards and surrounding galleries, especially in Pest. The stairwells are usually wide, but lifts are often small and old. In Buda, on the other side of the Danube, there are more villas and houses on hillsides, some with steep access roads. The city centre has heavy traffic, and stopping space is scarce. We clarify with you where the lorry can park.
Formalities
- No customs duty on household goods within the EU
- Deregistration at the citizens’ office (Bürgeramt) in Berlin
- Registration under Hungarian rules for longer stays
- Clarify vehicle re-registration and insurance
Moving in retirement
Some of our customers move to Hungary in retirement, often to a house in the countryside. In that case, it is frequently a matter of dissolving a Berlin household and only taking the essentials. We help with choosing, packing and disposal – more under house clearance Berlin and senior moves Berlin.
Preparation
Label boxes legibly, ideally with the room and a short description of the contents. Important documents, medication and valuables belong in your hand luggage. Take photos of the access to the new address and send us the pictures.
Costs
You can find out which factors generally determine the price under moving company Berlin costs. Other countries we drive to are listed under international removals Berlin.
Hungarian flats and the way up
In many Hungarian cities, flats are located in multi-storey buildings around a courtyard and reached via open access galleries. Large furniture often has to be carried along narrow stairs and galleries there. We therefore dismantle it as far as possible in Berlin and label all parts so that assembly at the destination is quick.
Timing and season
Summer is high season around Lake Balaton: the roads are busy, and in holiday resorts there are sometimes restrictions on delivery traffic. If you are moving there, it is best to plan the move for spring or autumn. In Budapest itself, traffic is heavy all year round; we schedule unloading in the morning whenever possible.
What you should clarify beforehand
Ask your landlord or the property management in Hungary whether a permit is required to park the lorry and whether there is a goods lift. The more we know in advance, the more accurate the quote will be.
Moving to Hungary: Budapest, Lake Balaton and Hungarian registration law
Hungary lies at the heart of Central Europe and is easy to reach from Berlin. Budapest attracts students, professionals and creatives, Lake Balaton is popular with retirees, and many families have roots in Hungary. As Hungary is an EU country, the move is duty-free. Nevertheless, there are a few special features concerning language, authorities and housing.
The journey to Budapest
Budapest is around 870 kilometres from Berlin. The route runs via Dresden, Prague and Brno, or through the Czech Republic and Slovakia into Hungary. Electronic toll systems apply in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, with distance-based charges for heavy vehicles. We plan two days for a lorry. If your destination is at Lake Balaton or in western Hungary, the route partly runs through Austria.
Registration in Hungary
In Berlin, you deregister at the citizens’ office. EU citizens who stay in Hungary for longer than three months register their stay with the Hungarian immigration authority and receive a registration certificate. In addition, your residential address is registered with the local authority, and you receive an address card. There are separate numbers for tax and social security. Have the necessary steps explained to you in advance, as the forms are usually in Hungarian.
Budapest period buildings
In Budapest, many people live in large Gründerzeit-era buildings with courtyards, galleries and high ceilings. The stairwells are wide, but lifts are not available everywhere or are very small. In Pest the streets are densely built up, while in Buda there are villa districts on the hillsides. A move into the city centre often requires a permit to stop or park. We clarify this based on your exact address.
Language and everyday life
Hungarian is not an Indo-European language and is difficult for Germans to learn. In Budapest you can get by with English and sometimes German, less so in the countryside. For tenancy agreements and official letters, a translation is worthwhile.
Retirement at Lake Balaton
Lake Balaton has been a popular destination for Germans for decades. Many own a holiday home there and move to the lake permanently when they retire. The houses often have large plots, cellars and outbuildings. Allow enough time to decide what should come with you from Berlin, as a second transport over this distance is expensive.
Costs
The costs depend on distance, volume, floors and additional services. For smaller quantities, a part load is often cheaper. More on our page international removals Berlin.
Arriving in Hungary
Hungary has a rich culture with thermal baths, coffee houses and wine regions. Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and life is cheaper than in Germany in many respects.
Living in Budapest and in the countryside
In Budapest, large period buildings with courtyards shape the cityscape, especially in Pest. Many of these buildings have old, narrow lifts or none at all, and the stairwells are wide but high. We therefore plan in more carriers for transporting large furniture. In Buda and the outer districts there are more detached houses with gardens. Many Germans live around Lake Balaton, often in holiday homes that become their main residence. Access there is usually good, but very busy in summer. Let us know in advance whether a lorry can stop in front of the house so that we can use the right vehicle.
EU rules apply to pets: a pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination are sufficient.

Is my furniture specially secured before transport?
Yes. We use blankets, film and suitable securing techniques to protect surfaces and prevent anything from slipping in the vehicle.

On arrival, we unload and place the furniture in the agreed positions. On request, we take care of assembly and the disposal of packing materials.
How much does a move from Berlin to Hungary cost?
Budapest is around 870 kilometres away via Prague and Bratislava or via Vienna. Diesel, tolls in the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Austria and in Hungary, plus an overnight stay, determine the price alongside the volume. You receive a fixed price. General information under moving company Berlin costs.
How long does a move from Berlin to Hungary take?
To Budapest or Győr usually two days, to Lake Balaton or Debrecen two to three days.
How much notice do I need for a move from Berlin to Hungary?
Four to eight weeks’ notice is ideal. In summer there is a lot of traffic around Lake Balaton, which we factor into the delivery.
How are my belongings insured when moving from Berlin to Hungary?
Up to Hungary, your household goods are covered by statutory liability, which amounts to 620 euros per cubic metre of loading volume. For designer furniture or a wine collection, we clarify during the survey whether additional insurance is needed.

No, Hungary is part of the EU, so your household goods do not need customs documents. If you stay longer than three months, you usually register your stay with the Hungarian immigration authority.
