Moving from Berlin to Italy: individually planned and reliably carried out

Preparation and personal advice

Thorough preparation creates certainty. Together we record the scope of your household goods, special items and any access restrictions at the collection and delivery addresses. On this basis, we draw up a clear plan that takes your dates and wishes into account.

Survey and quotation

Whether on site in Berlin or via video survey: we record all the details so that the quote is precisely tailored to your situation. This way you avoid surprises and get a transparent basis for further planning.

Packing and protection of fragile goods

Delicate furniture, art or instruments need special protective measures. We advise you on suitable materials, take care of careful packing on request and provide professional packing solutions so that your belongings can be transported safely.

How your move works

For your move from or to Berlin, we outline a typical process that we adapt to your requirements:

  1. Initial consultation and inventory: clarifying details and special features.
  2. Quote and scheduling: agreeing on the right services.
  3. Packing and loading: securing and professionally protecting your household goods.
  4. Transport: coordinating the journey and safe loading.
  5. Unloading and handover: coordinating the delivery and handover at the destination.
Part load in Berlin: transporting small quantities affordably and efficiently – Lion Umzüge

Transport and coordination

We organise the long-distance transport from Berlin to Italy or vice versa and agree loading conditions and delivery windows with you. Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin; we work from here and do not present ourselves as a local removal company at the destination.

Communication and a dedicated contact person

Throughout the entire project, you have a dedicated contact person at Lion Umzüge Berlin. We keep you regularly informed about progress, answer open questions and coordinate dates so that everything runs as smoothly as possible for you.

Moving from Berlin to Italy: across the Alps to your new home

From Berlin it is around 1,000 kilometres to Milan, about 1,200 to Bologna, around 1,500 to Rome and another 200 kilometres more to Naples. Most routes go via Munich and the Brenner Pass or via Switzerland. Depending on the destination, a move to Italy is therefore a project of two to four days. In winter, we allow extra time because of possible snowfall in the Alps.

Historic centres and restricted traffic zones

Many Italian cities have traffic-restricted zones in their old towns, known as ZTL, which only vehicles with a permit may enter. Anyone who drives in without a permit can expect a fine. For the move, a permit to enter and stop is applied for at the municipality, or we transfer the load to a smaller vehicle at the edge of the zone. Find out early whether your new address is in a ZTL.

Living in Italy

In the old towns, many buildings have narrow stone staircases and no lift. Large pieces of furniture often have to be dismantled or moved with an external furniture lift. In newer districts on the outskirts, access is usually easier. Photos of the entrance and the stairs help us a great deal with planning.

Formalities

  • Tax number (codice fiscale) for your tenancy agreement, bank and contracts
  • Registration of residence (residenza) with the municipality according to local rules
  • Deregistration at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) in Berlin
  • No customs formalities for household goods within the EU

Costs and alternatives

Distance, tolls, overnight stays and any transfers to other vehicles account for a large part of the price. For small quantities, a part load can be cheaper. You can find general information on costs under moving company Berlin costs, and more on international moves under international moves Berlin. If your journey takes you to the south-east, read about moving to Greece as well.

Moving to South Tyrol and the lakes

Many moves to Italy head north: to South Tyrol, Lake Garda or Lake Como. The route over the Brenner Pass is shorter than to Rome, but access roads to houses in mountain villages and on lakeshores are often narrow and steep. We check in advance whether a large lorry can reach the house or whether the load has to be transferred.

Summer heat and holiday season

In August, many Italians are on holiday and holiday resorts are very busy. At the same time, it gets very hot in the cargo area. Dates in spring or autumn are therefore usually more pleasant – for you, for your furniture and for our team.

Flat handover

When you take over your new flat, have its condition confirmed in writing before the furniture arrives. An empty flat is the best place to check that everything is in order.

Moving to Italy: across the Alps to a new life

Italy attracts Germans for many reasons: work in Milan or Turin, studies in Bologna or Florence, retirement on Lake Garda or in Tuscany. A move to Italy is a long journey with an Alpine crossing, different traffic rules and a bureaucracy that requires patience. Here we explain what you should know.

Brenner, Gotthard or Tauern

From Berlin it is around 1,050 kilometres to Milan and about 1,500 to Rome. The route usually goes via Munich and the Brenner Pass to South Tyrol and on towards Verona. Alternatives are the route through Switzerland and the Gotthard or through Austria and the Tauern motorway. On the Brenner, lorries are banned from driving at weekends and at night, and on certain days there is block clearance (dosed traffic) in Tyrol. We plan the journey to avoid these restrictions. For most destinations in Italy, we expect two to three days.

Residenza and codice fiscale

In Berlin, you deregister at the Bürgeramt. In Italy, you first need a tax number, the codice fiscale, which you can obtain from the tax office or via the Italian consulate. Without this number you cannot sign a tenancy agreement or an electricity contract. If you live in Italy permanently, you register your residence with the municipality’s registry office, the Anagrafe. The municipality then usually checks whether you actually live at the address. Allow some time for these steps.

Old towns and zona a traffico limitato

Many Italian cities have historic centres with traffic-restricted zones, the ZTL. Only vehicles with a permit may drive there, and violations are recorded by camera. A move into an old town requires a special permit from the municipal police. We check in advance whether your address lies in such a zone and apply for the permit in good time. Using a smaller vehicle for the last few metres is often worthwhile.

Living in Italy

Italian flats are often in apartment buildings with a portineria, i.e. a caretaker or concierge. Lifts in older buildings are small, and some staircases are narrow. Flats are often let furnished or with a kitchen. Before the move, find out which furniture is already in the new flat so that you do not transport anything twice.

Retirement in the south

Anyone who wants to spend their retirement in Italy should find out about health insurance, pension payments and tax matters in advance. Part of your household goods can also stay in storage in Berlin at first until it is clear what life in the south will look like.

Costs

The costs depend on distance, volume, access at the destination and additional services. For small quantities, a part load is often cheaper. Find out more on our page international moves Berlin.

Arriving in Italy

Italy thrives on its regions, each with its own cuisine, its own dialect and its own rhythm. An Italian course opens many doors, and at the weekly market you quickly get talking to people.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How does the survey work if I live in Italy?

We offer digital surveys via video call and clarify all relevant points remotely. If necessary, additional photos or measurements can easily be sent later so that the quote is accurate.

Do you take care of dismantling and reassembling furniture?

Yes, on request we professionally dismantle furniture before transport and reassemble it at the destination. We discuss the effort involved in advance and integrate these services into your schedule.

How much does a move from Berlin to Italy cost?

It is around 1,000 kilometres to Milan and about 1,500 to Rome. Besides volume and floors, the price is determined by tolls in Austria and Italy, overnight stays and access – many old towns have restricted traffic zones. You receive a fixed price. More under moving company Berlin costs.

How long does a move from Berlin to Italy take?

To South Tyrol, Milan or Lake Garda usually two to three days, to Rome or Naples three to four. We plan the journey over the Brenner Pass with a buffer, because there are traffic jams there at weekends and during the holidays.

How much notice do I need for a move from Berlin to Italy?

You should enquire six to eight weeks in advance. For many Italian city centres we need a permit to enter the restricted traffic zone, and municipalities do not always issue these at short notice.

How are my belongings insured when moving from Berlin to Italy?

All the way to Italy, we cover damage within the scope of statutory liability, i.e. up to 620 euros per cubic metre. Art or designer furniture is better covered by your own transport insurance.

Do I need customs documents for a move from Berlin to Italy?

No, no customs documents are required for household goods between Germany and Italy. What matters is registering with the municipality (Anagrafe) at your new place of residence if you move your residence to Italy.
