A long-distance move between Berlin and Luxembourg requires careful planning, reliable organisation and experience with cross-border transport. Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and accompanies you personally through every step of your move — from the first consultation to the handover at your new home. We organise transport to Luxembourg and from Luxembourg to Berlin; we do not claim to have a local branch at the destination.

How your long-distance move with Lion Umzüge works
Our experience with long-distance moves
Long-distance moves differ from moves within the city in many details. We take into account access routes, possible no-parking zones, lift situations and stairwells so that the process runs as smoothly as possible. Clear arrangements with you and realistic assessments in advance reduce surprises on moving day.
Planning and preparation
First, we determine the scope of your move together. This can be done in person at your home in Berlin, by phone or via a video survey. Based on the inventory, we draw up a plan for packing, the equipment needed and possible protective measures for fragile items.
Good preparation also means packing valuable and important documents separately and pre-sorting furniture as far as possible so that setting up at the destination goes faster.
Our service process
So that you have a clear picture of the process, we work in a structured and transparent way. The steps are easy to follow and are agreed with you in advance.
- Inventory and individual consultation
- Preparation of the quote and scheduling
- Proper packing and protection of your belongings
- Loading, transport to Luxembourg and unloading
- Assembly and handover of your furnishings
Transport and furniture handling
When loading, we make sure items are handled gently and the load is properly secured. We treat bulky or fragile pieces of furniture with suitable protective materials and special techniques to avoid damage.
During transport, we keep you informed of progress and are available for any questions. If special transport aids are required, we discuss them in advance so that everything is ready on moving day.

After the move
After delivery, we can help you position the furniture and set up the most important areas so that you quickly feel at home. On request, we remove the packing material and dispose of it properly.
Finally, we carry out a short handover with you to clarify any open questions and make sure everything has been done to your satisfaction.
Moving Berlin–Luxembourg: a small country, a big undertaking
Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but it is around 750 kilometres from Berlin. The route goes via Frankfurt or via Cologne and the Eifel. We always plan the move over two days. Many of our customers move to Luxembourg for a job, for example in the financial sector or at European institutions.
Living in Luxembourg – or in the border region
Because housing in Luxembourg is expensive and scarce, many employees live in Trier, in Saarland or in towns near the border in Belgium and France and commute every day. This also changes how the move is planned: if your new home is in Germany, the familiar rules for registration and deregistration apply; if it is in Luxembourg, you register with the municipality of your new place of residence. So settle the housing question before we fix the date.
Formalities when living in Luxembourg
- Deregistration at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) in Berlin
- Declaration of arrival with the Luxembourg municipality shortly after moving in
- Registration for longer stays as an EU citizen
- No customs duties for household goods within the EU
Flats and access
Luxembourg City has many new buildings with lifts and underground car parks, while the old town and older districts such as Grund or Pfaffenthal have narrow, steep streets. Let us know the exact address and we will plan the vehicle size and access.
When your employer pays
International employers often require a detailed quote. Our fixed-price quote lists all services individually. If you need to spend a transitional period in a furnished flat, we can store your furniture – see Storage Berlin.
Costs
The usual cost factors are explained on the page Moving Company Berlin Costs. Our services for other countries can be found under International Moves Berlin, and information on the neighbouring country under Moving Berlin–France.
Life where three countries meet
Luxembourg borders Germany, France and Belgium, and many people cross a border every day. Those who work in Luxembourg and live in Trier or Saarland often benefit from lower rents. For a move from Berlin, the distance in all three directions is similar; we plan it to suit the address.
A multilingual environment
Luxembourgish, French and German are spoken in Luxembourg. Official letters often arrive in French. If you are unsure, ask your municipality for advice; many administrations also provide information in German.
New buildings with rules
Many flats in Luxembourg City are in new residential complexes with strict house rules. Moves often have to be registered in advance, and the lift must be lined with protective mats. Clarify this with the building management beforehand.
Moving to Luxembourg: a small country with big employers
Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in the EU, but an important location for banks, investment fund companies, EU institutions and international businesses. Many Germans work there; some live in the country, others commute from the Trier region or Saarland. As an EU country, moving there is duty-free, but there are some special features regarding housing and the authorities.
The journey to Luxembourg
From Berlin to Luxembourg City it is around 750 kilometres. The route goes via Frankfurt or Cologne and then via Trier or Saarbrücken into Luxembourg. For a lorry we plan two days. The border crossings are open and there are generally no checks. However, rush-hour traffic around Luxembourg City is considerable, as many commuters from France, Belgium and Germany come into the country every day. We plan the arrival outside these times.
Registering with the municipality
In Berlin you deregister at the Bürgeramt. In Luxembourg you register with your municipality within eight days of arrival. EU citizens staying longer than three months receive a registration certificate. Have your ID, tenancy agreement and employment contract ready. The official languages are Luxembourgish, French and German, and many forms are also available in German.
Living in Luxembourg
The housing market in Luxembourg is expensive, especially in the capital. Many people therefore live in smaller municipalities or across the border. Luxembourg City has modern residential complexes on the Kirchberg plateau and older houses in districts such as Limpertsberg or Bonnevoie. The old town with its steep lanes is difficult for lorries. We plan access based on your address.
Cross-border commuters
Many people who work in Luxembourg live in Trier, Perl, Saarburg or other towns in the border region. For them, the move is a domestic move to Rhineland-Palatinate or Saarland. Special tax and social security rules apply to cross-border commuters, so you should find out about them in advance.
Multilingualism in everyday life
In Luxembourg many people switch effortlessly between Luxembourgish, French, German and English. You will get by well with German in everyday life, but a Luxembourgish course is worthwhile for integration.
Costs
The costs depend on volume, floors, access and additional services. For small volumes, a part load is often cheaper. More information is available on our page International Moves Berlin.
Arriving in Luxembourg
Luxembourg is green, easy to get around and has free public transport. The Ardennes in the north and the vineyards along the Moselle offer lovely destinations for day trips.
A note on your car: if you move your residence to Luxembourg, you must register your vehicle there after a certain period. Vehicle tax and insurance are then governed by Luxembourg rules. Find out early from the responsible authority.
