Planning a long-distance move: from Berlin to another city – Lion Umzüge

The specific process of your long-distance move

So that you can rely on a well-thought-out process, we set out the typical work steps in a clear list:

  1. Initial consultation and needs assessment – by phone or in person in Berlin
  2. On-site recording of your furniture and any special notes
  3. Safe packing of fragile items and protective measures
  4. Organisation of loading and support during transport
  5. Coordinated unloading and placement of the furniture at the destination

Practical preparation for customers

Good preparation reduces effort and stress on moving day. Draw up an inventory list, mark boxes and note fragile contents. We give advice on suitable packing materials and help with planning for bulky furniture.

Communication along the entire route

During transport we keep you informed about the progress of your move. If necessary, we adjust arrangements and find practical solutions if changes arise at short notice. Coordination is handled centrally from Berlin so that processes remain transparent.

Moving between Berlin and Poland: neighbours with short distances

No other neighbouring country is as close to Berlin as Poland. Szczecin (Stettin) is only around 150 kilometres away, Poznań about 270, Wrocław around 350 and Warsaw or Kraków just under 600. This means that a move to western Poland can often be completed in one day, while we plan two days for Warsaw, Łódź or Kraków.

Typical moves on this route

  • Returning to Poland after years in Berlin, often with the whole family
  • Moving to a house near the border, for example around Szczecin
  • A job change to Warsaw, Wrocław or Poznań
  • Partial moves in which individual pieces of furniture or an heirloom are transported

Formalities within the EU

There are no customs formalities for your household goods between Germany and Poland. In Berlin you deregister at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) when you give up your residence. In Poland, you register your residence with the municipality; for longer stays as an EU citizen, additional registration may be required. Ask the relevant local office about the current deadlines.

Living in Polish cities

In the city centres of Wrocław, Poznań or Kraków there are many period buildings, often without a lift and with passageways into the courtyard. The large housing estates from the 1970s and 1980s have lifts, but small cabins. New buildings on the outskirts usually have underground car parks and good access. Tell us where you are going and we will plan the vehicle and staff accordingly.

A tip for moves near the border

If you are moving to the area around Szczecin, a move is hardly more complex than a trip within Brandenburg. That makes it cheaper than many long-distance moves within Germany. Nevertheless, enquire early, because dates at the end of the month are quickly taken.

Costs

The price depends mainly on the distance, the volume and the additional services. You can find general information on this under Moving Company Berlin Costs. For small quantities, a part load may make sense. Read more about moves abroad under International Moves Berlin, and for the neighbouring country to the south there is the page Moving Berlin–Czech Republic.

Moving to Szczecin and the border region

The region around Szczecin is attractive for many Berliners: the city can be reached quickly, and some people even commute to Berlin. A move there is hardly more complex than a move to the Brandenburg countryside around Berlin. Houses in the surrounding area often have large plots and unpaved access roads; we look at the location in photos beforehand.

Warsaw and Kraków

In the big cities, many people live in new residential complexes with a lift and underground car park. The property managers often have fixed rules for moves: advance notification, protection of the lift, specific time slots. Clarify these points with the management, and moving day will run smoothly.

Bilingual labelling

If family or friends are helping with unloading at the destination, it is best to label boxes with room numbers or bilingually. That way everyone immediately finds the right room.

Moving to Poland: close by, but a country with its own rules

Poland is Berlin’s direct neighbour. Szczecin is only around 150 kilometres away, Poznań about 270, Wrocław 350, Warsaw around 570. Many people move back and forth between Berlin and Poland, for work or private reasons. As Poland is an EU country, there are no customs formalities for household goods. Nevertheless, there are a few things you should bear in mind so that the move runs smoothly.

The route east

The route to Warsaw runs via the A12 and the Polish A2 via Frankfurt (Oder) and Poznań. To Wrocław it goes via the A15 and A18 to the border and then on along Polish expressways. Polish motorways are partly subject to tolls. An electronic toll system applies to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. We make sure that the vehicle is correctly registered. Depending on the destination, the move can be completed in one or two days.

Registration in Poland

In Berlin you deregister at the Bürgeramt. In Poland you have to register your residence with the municipal office if you are staying longer. EU citizens who live in Poland for more than three months also have their stay registered with the responsible voivodeship office. For many dealings with the authorities you need a PESEL number, the personal identification number. Find out before the move which documents are required.

Living in Polish cities

In Warsaw, Kraków or Wrocław, besides period buildings there are many new residential complexes with a lift, underground car park and porter. In such complexes, the move often has to be registered with the management. In older apartment blocks from the socialist era, the stairwells are narrow and the lifts small. We plan staff and equipment according to local conditions.

Language and communication

Polish is spoken in Poland. In the big cities you can often get by with English, less so in smaller towns. For dealings with the authorities and tenancy agreements it is helpful to have a Polish-speaking person with you. For the move itself, we take care of coordination with the property management or neighbours as far as possible.

Commuting between Berlin and western Poland

Many people live in Szczecin or Słubice and work in Berlin or Brandenburg. For them, a move is short and quickly done. If you are only taking part of your household goods with you, a small van is often sufficient. We advise you on which solution is the most economical.

Costs

The costs depend on distance, volume and additional services. For nearby destinations such as Szczecin they are close to those of a larger regional move, for Warsaw or Kraków correspondingly higher. Our page International Moves Berlin offers more information.

Arriving in Poland

Poland has developed enormously in recent decades. The big cities are modern and the old towns lovingly restored. The Baltic coast, the Masurian Lake District and the Tatra Mountains offer nature for every taste.

A practical tip: Polish flats are often let with a fitted kitchen, whereas in Berlin people often take their own kitchen with them. Clarify beforehand whether your kitchen has to come with you or can be sold in Berlin.

Can Lion Umzüge collect from anywhere in Berlin?

Yes. Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and organises collections within the city. All coordination is handled by our contact persons in Berlin.

What happens if I cannot be present on handover day?

It makes sense for you or an authorised person to be present. If that is not possible, we agree alternatives, such as a written handover agreement or clear placement instructions, so that unloading runs smoothly.

How much does a move from Berlin to Poland cost?

That depends very much on the destination: Szczecin is only around 150 kilometres away, Poznań about 270, Warsaw around 570. Volume, floors and possibly the Polish lorry toll are added to this. After the on-site survey you receive a fixed price. General information on costs under Moving Company Berlin Costs.

How long does a move from Berlin to Poland take?

To Szczecin or Poznań we can often complete a move in one day. For Warsaw, Kraków or Gdańsk we plan two days so that your household goods do not have to be unloaded at night.

How much lead time do I need for a move from Berlin to Poland?

Four to six weeks’ lead time is usually enough for Poland. For moves to Szczecin or the border region, we can also find a date at short notice thanks to the short distance.

How are my belongings insured during a move from Berlin to Poland?

For moves to Poland too, we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB), generally for 620 euros per cubic metre of loading space. For glass display cabinets or paintings, an additional policy is worthwhile.

Do I need customs papers for a move from Berlin to Poland?

No, there are no customs formalities for household goods between Germany and Poland. Remember to deregister in Berlin and to register your residence in Poland with the relevant municipality if you are staying longer than three months.
