Moving Berlin–Potsdam: a short distance with its own rules
Depending on the starting district, Berlin and Potsdam are only 25 to 50 kilometres apart. From Zehlendorf or Steglitz you quickly reach the state capital via the A115 or federal road B1, while from Pankow or Lichtenberg it takes considerably longer because of city traffic. A move to Potsdam is therefore almost always done in one day, even for larger flats. Nevertheless, it is not a move within Berlin: Potsdam belongs to Brandenburg and has its own authorities and its own rules for parking ban zones.
Living in Potsdam
Potsdam’s building stock is varied. In the city centre and in the Brandenburger Vorstadt there are period buildings, some of them listed, with narrow stairs and tight entrances. In Babelsberg you will find villas, period buildings and newer housing developments. In the Bornstedter Feld and other new quarters there are modern buildings with lifts and underground car parks, and in districts such as Drewitz or Am Stern many prefabricated GDR-era blocks. These differences determine how long the move takes and how many porters we need.
The typical process
- Survey of your Berlin flat and fixed-price quote
- Apply for parking ban zones in Berlin and Potsdam
- Pack boxes – yourself or with our packing service
- On moving day: dismantling, loading, a short drive, unloading and assembly
- A joint walk-through of the new flat
From a flat to a house
Many of our customers move from a rented flat in Berlin to a house in Potsdam or the surrounding area. Garden furniture, bicycles and tools that used to be in the cellar are often added. Include these items in the survey so that the vehicle is big enough. If you want to get rid of a lot of old things when moving out of your old household, we will take care of the clearance.
Commuting after the move
Many new Potsdam residents continue to work in Berlin. Regional trains and the S-Bahn connect the two cities well, and the car is also an option. For moving day, we recommend that one person stays in Berlin until the lorry is loaded and a second person unlocks the flat in Potsdam.
Costs
Because the distance is short, we calculate a move to Potsdam in a similar way to a move within Berlin. Volume, floors and additional services are decisive. More on this on the page moving company Berlin costs. If you are moving north, you will find similar information on our page on moving Berlin–Oranienburg.
Registering in Potsdam
Within two weeks you register at the citizens’ service (Bürgerservice) of the City of Potsdam. Because you are changing federal state, responsibility for some areas also changes, for example for schools and nurseries.
From Berlin to Potsdam: close by, yet a different federal state
Potsdam lies right on Berlin’s doorstep, and many people move back and forth between the two cities. Nevertheless, a move to Potsdam is not an ordinary Berlin move, because you are changing federal state. This has consequences for authorities, parking ban zones and some everyday matters. On this page we summarise what you should look out for.
Registering at the citizens’ service of the City of Potsdam
After moving in, you register within two weeks at the citizens’ service of the state capital Potsdam. Deregistration in Berlin happens automatically. As you are changing federal state, responsibilities may change, for example at the tax office or for vehicle registration. If you have a car, you must re-register it in Potsdam. As a rule, you may keep your Berlin number plate.
Applying for a parking ban zone in Potsdam
The City of Potsdam, not the Berlin district office, is responsible for the parking ban zone at your new address. Lead times and fees differ. Especially in the city centre, in the Dutch Quarter or in the Brandenburger Vorstadt, the streets are narrow, and without a parking ban zone the removal van will not find a space. We apply for both zones, in Berlin and in Potsdam, so that you do not have to deal with two authorities.
Residential areas in Potsdam
The Berliner Vorstadt and the Nauener Vorstadt are popular with newcomers, with villas, period buildings and proximity to the water. Babelsberg has its own character with the Weavers’ Quarter, film studios and park. In the Bornstedter Feld many new flats have been built, ideal for families. In Potsdam-West and Am Stern there are cheaper flats, often in prefabricated GDR-era blocks with or without a lift. We plan the move to suit your destination district.
Cobblestones and listed buildings
Many streets in Potsdam’s city centre are cobbled, and numerous houses are listed buildings. For us this means carrying furniture rather than rolling it over bumpy stones, and being particularly careful in historic stairwells. If you are moving into a listed building, ask the property management whether there are special rules for moves.
Short distance, one day
A move from Berlin to Potsdam can almost always be done in one day. The drive via the A115 or federal road B1 takes half an hour to an hour, depending on the starting point and traffic. Traffic jams at the Funkturm junction or on the Glienicke Bridge can lengthen the journey, which is why we start early. The costs are usually close to those of a move within Berlin, depending on volume, floors and additional services.
Commuting and everyday life
Many people who move to Potsdam continue to work in Berlin. The city centre is easy to reach by S-Bahn and regional train. The Deutschlandticket is valid in both federal states. If you commute by bike, you will find beautiful routes along the water, for example through Volkspark Glienicke or along Lake Griebnitzsee.
A tip for neighbours of the palace parks: near Sanssouci and the Neuer Garten there are streets with through-traffic restrictions for lorries. We check access in advance so that there are no surprises on moving day.
