Professional long-distance moves between Berlin and Belgium – personally planned

Personal advice before the move

In the first step, we clarify your wishes: which furniture is coming along, what needs special packing, and what are the access conditions in Berlin and in Belgium? The consultation can take place in person on site or online, so that all relevant points are clarified early on.

Precise planning for smooth processes

We draw up a schedule tailored to you. It includes loading time windows, packing order, necessary equipment and the best possible route plan from Berlin. The aim is a structured move without avoidable delays.

Packing and careful transport

Delicate items such as furniture, glass or electronics are professionally protected. We use sturdy packing materials and well-thought-out loading so that your furniture survives the transport to Belgium safely.

Moving Berlin–Belgium: from the Spree to Brussels, Antwerp or Liège

Many moves to Belgium are work-related: Brussels is home to numerous EU institutions, associations and international organisations, and Antwerp is an important port and trading location. From Berlin it is around 770 kilometres to Brussels, about 720 to Antwerp and around 680 to Liège. We plan these moves over two days, or three for large households.

Three languages, many responsibilities

Belgium has three official languages and a more regionally structured administration than Germany. Depending on whether you move to Flanders, Wallonia or the Brussels-Capital Region, the contact points and forms differ. After moving in, you register with the municipality; a police officer usually then calls round to confirm your residence. This check is common in Belgium and no cause for concern.

Living in Brussels

Brussels has many narrow, multi-storey townhouses with narrow stairs. As in the Netherlands, large pieces of furniture are often hoisted through the window there with an external lift. Check beforehand whether this is necessary at your address. A permit from the municipality is usually required to park the removal van.

If your employer pays for the move

International employers often require a detailed quote with an inventory list and individual items. Our written fixed-price quote usually meets these requirements. Ask whether further documents are needed, such as confirmation of insurance.

Preparation

  • Deregister at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) in Berlin
  • Obtain the dimensions of the stairs and windows at the new address
  • Keep important documents in your hand luggage
  • Clarify vehicle re-registration in accordance with Belgian rules

Costs

In addition to staff and vehicle, there are fuel and overnight costs. You can find a general explanation under moving company Berlin costs. Read more about our moves abroad under international removals Berlin; for the neighbouring country, see the page moving Berlin–Luxembourg.

Antwerp, Ghent and Liège

Not every move to Belgium leads to Brussels. In Antwerp and Ghent there are many narrow townhouses with steep stairs, and in Liège and other Walloon cities houses on hillsides. In all cases: the more precisely we know the access routes, the better we can plan staff and equipment. Photos of the building entrance, stairs and street help a great deal.

Languages at the destination

Depending on the region, Dutch, French or German is spoken. So also label your boxes with room numbers, which you also stick on the doors in the new flat. This way everyone involved finds the right room straight away when unloading.

Flat handover in Belgium

In Belgium, a detailed inventory of condition is often drawn up when you move in. Schedule the appointment so that it takes place before the furniture arrives – the condition is easiest to check in an empty flat.

Moving to Belgium: Brussels, Antwerp and the municipal administration

Belgium is a career destination for many Germans. Brussels is home to the institutions of the European Union, NATO and numerous associations and companies. Antwerp, Ghent, Liège and Leuven also attract newcomers, and in East Belgium German is even spoken. As an EU country, Belgium can be reached without customs, but there are a few special features regarding authorities, language and housing.

The journey to Brussels

From Berlin to Brussels it is around 770 kilometres. The route takes the A2 to the Ruhr area, then via Cologne and Aachen into Belgium. For a lorry, we plan two days. The Brussels ring road and the access roads into the city are very busy at rush hour, so we schedule arrival for late morning wherever possible.

Registering with the municipality

In Berlin, you deregister at the Bürgeramt. In Belgium, you must register with the municipal administration of your place of residence within eight days of arrival. The police then usually check with a home visit that you actually live at the address given. Only then do you receive your residence card. Have your tenancy agreement, ID and, if applicable, your employment contract ready.

Multilingualism

Brussels is officially bilingual, French and Dutch. Dutch is spoken in Flanders, French in Wallonia and German in East Belgium. Forms and dealings with the authorities are conducted in the respective official language. This hardly matters for the move itself, but it does for tenancy agreements and official letters. If in doubt, have important documents translated.

Brussels townhouses

Many people in Brussels live in narrow, tall townhouses with steep stairs. Large pieces of furniture often only get into the house through the window. As in the Netherlands, using a furniture lift is common. A permit from the municipality is required to use the pavement and put up no-parking signs. Brussels consists of 19 municipalities, each with its own rules. We clarify the details based on your exact address.

Working for the EU and institutions

Anyone working for an EU institution or an international organisation often receives special support with the move, sometimes with fixed requirements for quotes and invoicing. Check in advance with your employer which documents are required. We prepare detailed quotes that meet such requirements.

Costs and options

The costs depend on volume, floors, furniture lift and additional services. If you are only taking a few pieces of furniture, you can save with a part load. Find out more about international moves on our page international removals Berlin.

Arriving in Belgium

Belgium is compact, and Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges can be reached quickly by train. If you want to discover Belgian cuisine, you will find small brasseries, chip shops and chocolatiers in every neighbourhood. Take time after the move to get to know your new surroundings.

A note for drivers: if you move your residence to Belgium, you must register your vehicle in Belgium after a certain period. Find out early which documents the Belgian vehicle registration authority requires.
