Why a regional move makes sense

Short journeys and local knowledge create advantages: you benefit from quick coordination, flexible alternatives in case of bottlenecks and less strain on your belongings. Our experience with Berlin’s residential neighbourhoods helps us to realistically assess narrow staircases, access roads and parking options.

Our services — how we support you

We take care of organising the move, carefully securing your furnishings and coordinating everything on site. This includes providing suitable packing materials, handling delicate items properly and loading and unloading in a structured way. On request, we also help with assembling furniture and setting up at your destination.

Practical tips for a smooth process

Start a room-by-room inventory early: sort out what no longer needs to come with you and label boxes clearly by room and content. Pack a bag with essentials for the first few days (chargers, important documents, a change of clothes). Damage can be avoided with good padding and targeted labelling.

How your move works — our approach

So that you know exactly what is happening, we work to a clear, transparent plan:

  1. Consultation on site or by phone: together we clarify the volume, access and any particular challenges.
  2. Individual planning: we set time slots, the equipment required and the work steps.
  3. Careful packing: furniture and delicate items are properly secured and labelled.
  4. Transport: loading and unloading are carried out systematically to minimise time and effort.
  5. Setting up at the destination: we arrange the furniture according to your instructions and check that everything is complete.
  6. Final check: together we go through the checklist and clarify any final details.

Throughout the entire process we value transparency: you get clear contact persons, timely information and the option of making changes at short notice. This way you always stay informed and can concentrate on what matters.

Regional move: within Berlin and into the surrounding area

Most of the moves we carry out are regional moves: from Kreuzberg to Tempelhof, from Pankow to Reinickendorf, from Spandau to Falkensee or from Lichtenberg to Bernau. The distance is short, but the effort depends heavily on the buildings, the floors and the traffic. In Berlin in particular, a five-kilometre drive right across the city centre can take longer than an hour on the motorway.

Berlin streets and no-parking zones

In the inner-city districts, a free space outside the door is rare. Without a no-parking zone, the lorry often has to double-park or stop far away, and every metre of carrying distance costs time. We apply for the zone for both addresses if you wish. How this works is explained on our No-Parking Zone Berlin page.

Into the surrounding area: Brandenburg on your doorstep

Many Berliners move to the surrounding area – to Potsdam, Falkensee, Bernau, Oranienburg or Königs Wusterhausen. Often they move from a flat into a house with a garden. These moves are usually completed in one day, even for larger households. You can find more information on our Moving Berlin–Potsdam and Moving Berlin–Oranienburg pages.

A typical day

Time (example) Step
8:00 Arrival, protecting the staircase and floors, dismantling the furniture
10:30 Loading the lorry
12:00 Drive to the new address
13:00 Unloading, boxes into the labelled rooms
15:00 Assembling the furniture, joint walk-through

These times are an example for a two-room flat. Your move may be quicker or slower.

Costs

For short distances, staff, vehicle and working time are what count most. Our Moving Company Berlin Costs page gives you an overview. Information on the individual districts can be found under Moving Company Berlin Districts.

Within Berlin: why distance hardly matters

For a move within the city, the kilometres play a smaller role than many people think. Whether from Kreuzberg to Neukölln or from Spandau to Pankow – the drive usually makes up only a small part of the day. What matters are the floors, the carrying distances, the volume and the traffic at the time of day. A fifth floor in a period building takes more time than twenty kilometres on the city motorway.

Traffic and time of day

Berlin’s main roads are heavily congested in the morning and late afternoon. That is why we like to start early and plan the drive between the addresses outside rush hour wherever possible. For moves into the surrounding area, we also take commuter traffic on the arterial roads into account.

Two addresses, two no-parking zones

Especially with regional moves within the city centre, both addresses often need a no-parking zone. In Brandenburg you apply for the zone at the responsible municipality or district authority; in Berlin we take care of it for you.

Moving at the weekend

Many working people want to move on a Saturday. Saturday dates are popular and get booked up quickly. If you are flexible, you will find a date more easily during the week and will also have less traffic on the roads.

Local moves into the Berlin surrounding area

Many Berliners don’t move to another big city but just a few kilometres further: to Potsdam, Falkensee, Bernau, Königs Wusterhausen or one of the many municipalities around the city. For us this is a regional move that is completed in one day. Still, a few things are different from moves within the city.

A detached house instead of a flat

Anyone moving to the surrounding area often switches from a flat to a house with a garden. That means fewer stairs but more space, a garage, cellar and garden shed. Plan which rooms you want to set up first. Garden furniture, tools and bicycles usually go straight into the garage or shed. This shortens the route through the house and keeps it clean.

Access roads and paths

In new housing estates, roads are sometimes not yet finished, and in older settlements there are narrow lanes with no turning space. Take a look at the access beforehand and tell us whether a large lorry can drive right up to the house. Sometimes a smaller vehicle making two trips is the better solution. No-parking zones are needed less often in the surrounding area than in Berlin, but they are not always unnecessary, for example in narrow village centres.

Re-registration and authorities

If you move from Berlin to Brandenburg, you must register with the registration authority of your new municipality within two weeks. This is often the citizens’ office in the town hall or Amt. Your car must also be re-registered if you want or need to change the number plate. In Brandenburg, nursery (Kita) places are usually allocated by the municipalities or local providers. Take care of this early, as places are scarce in many areas, and ask the municipality which primary school is responsible for you.

Commuting after the move

Many people who move to the surrounding area continue to work in Berlin. Check the S-Bahn and regional train connections and the travel times at rush hour beforehand. As for fare zones: Berlin ABC covers parts of the surrounding area, while places further away lie outside it within the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association tariff.

Two municipalities, one day

A regional move into the surrounding area is usually completed in one day: loading in Berlin in the morning, driving at midday, unloading and assembling in the afternoon. For larger houses we plan two days, one for packing and loading, one for assembly. If you want to know more about Potsdam, read our page on moving from Berlin to Potsdam.

From the surrounding area to Berlin

Of course, there is also the opposite direction: families whose children have moved out move back into the city, often into a smaller flat. The house with cellar and attic then becomes a flat. Here, sorting out before the move is the most important step.

One advantage of the surrounding area: there is often more space in front of the house, and the vehicle can park right in the driveway. This saves walking and makes the day shorter.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I best prepare my flat?

Structured preparation saves time: declutter rooms beforehand, label boxes by room and list delicate items separately. We are happy to supply the packing materials you need and give practical tips on packing efficiently.

Can I have special items transported?

Yes. We handle special items such as instruments or delicate decorative objects individually. Let us know the details in advance so that we can plan suitable protective measures and safe transport.

How much does a regional move from Berlin cost?

For moves into the surrounding area – for example to Potsdam, Bernau or Königs Wusterhausen – there are hardly any extra kilometres. The price is determined mainly by volume, floors and carrying distances, and for houses with gardens often also by longer walks to the van. You receive a fixed price. Guide prices under Moving Company Berlin Costs.

What does a regional move with Lion Umzüge include?

Moves within Berlin and into the surrounding Brandenburg area with a van or lorry, no-parking zone, furniture dismantling and assembly and, on request, packing service. The move is usually completed in one day.

How short-notice can I get a date for a regional move?

For regional moves, three to four weeks’ lead time is often enough, because no overnight stay or long journey needs to be planned. For the end of the month, you should enquire earlier.

Can I combine several services for a regional move?

Yes. Even for a move into the surrounding area you can add packing service, assembly service, house clearance and storage – for example if the new house won’t be finished until later.

How are my belongings insured during a regional move?

For regional moves, the German Commercial Code (HGB) limits our liability to 620 euros for each cubic metre occupied. For garden furniture, tools or high-value antiques we recommend additional insurance.
