Expert moves from Berlin to Dortmund
A long-distance move places special demands on planning and organisation. From Berlin, Lion Umzüge supports you individually with your move to Dortmund and ensures that your furniture and belongings arrive safely. We take care of the coordination so that you can concentrate on your fresh start.

Why Lion Umzüge for your long-distance move?
As a Berlin-based company, we offer personal advice and experienced coordination specifically for long-distance moves. You receive clear information about processes and options, without unnecessary jargon. Important: Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and does not present itself as a local removal company in Dortmund.
Our range of services
We put together services that suit your move: careful packing, safe loading, gentle transport and coordinated handover at your destination. On request, we plan additional help for delicate or bulky items so that everything arrives undamaged.
How your long-distance move works
Transparent steps give you planning certainty. The typical process can be divided into clear phases:
- Getting in touch and initial consultation: we clarify your wishes and any special requirements.
- On-site survey or digital inventory: determining the volume and access.
- Preparing the quote and agreeing the details: defining the services you want.
- Packing and protective measures: furniture is properly secured.
- Transport to Dortmund: coordinated loading and journey.
- Delivery and setting up: unloading, placement and final check.
Tips for preparation
Prepare your move step by step: sort things out early, dispose of or sell what you don’t need and make a list of priority items. Label boxes by room and content so that unloading goes smoothly.

Moving Berlin–Dortmund: a fresh start in the Ruhr area
Dortmund is the largest city in the Ruhr area and, for many newcomers from Berlin, the starting point in a new region. Anyone arriving here quickly learns that the Ruhr area is a continuous landscape of cities where people often live in one city and work in the next. When looking for a flat, it is therefore worth looking beyond the city boundary – and for us it hardly matters whether your new address is in Dortmund itself, in Witten or in Lünen.
Which home, how much effort?
| Type of home | Typical for | What it means for the move |
|---|---|---|
| Period building | Kreuzviertel, Kaiserstraßenviertel | lots of stairs, often no lift |
| Estate house | former mining estates | narrow stairs, small rooms |
| New build | Phoenix-See, new neighbourhoods | lift and underground car park, coordinate dates with the property management |
| Post-war building | Nordstadt, many outlying areas | three to four floors, narrow staircases |
The journey
Around 490 kilometres via the A2 – one of the busiest lorry routes in Germany. That is why we set off early and allow buffer time for traffic jams. Whether we unload on the same day or the next morning depends on the volume and your wishes. Both are possible and are set out precisely in the quote.
If you are moving into a house
In the Ruhr area, home ownership is more affordable for many people than in Berlin. Anyone moving from a rented flat into a terraced or semi-detached house often buys new furniture as well. We can assemble it when you move in. You can find out what we assemble on our Assembly Service Berlin page. We dismantle the old kitchen and reassemble it at the new location, provided it fits – see Kitchen Installation Berlin.
Costs
The fixed price depends on volume, floors, distance and additional services. A general explanation can be found under Moving Company Berlin Costs. You can read more about the route and the process on our Long-Distance Move Berlin–Dortmund page.
Arriving
You must register with the citizens’ services (Bürgerdienste) within two weeks of moving in. You should also update the details for your car, bank, insurance policies and the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag).
Living in the Ruhr area: keep the neighbouring towns in mind
Not everyone who works in Dortmund lives in Dortmund. Schwerte, Lünen, Unna and Witten are so close that many commuters look for a flat there. For the move this makes hardly any difference: the distance from Berlin is almost the same, and we plan the vehicle and date according to the specific address.
Studying at TU Dortmund
The university and the university of applied sciences attract many students every year. If you are only furnishing a room, you don’t need a large lorry. You can read more about small moves on our Part-Load Berlin page.
Before moving day
Apply to the city for the no-parking zone in Dortmund in good time. In the Kreuzviertel and the city centre the streets are narrow and densely parked – without a no-parking zone we have to stop far away, and the move takes longer.
Arriving in Dortmund: the Ruhr, neighbourhoods and authorities
Dortmund is the largest city in the Ruhr area and has developed from a coal and steel centre into a city with universities, technology parks and logistics. Anyone moving here from Berlin will find affordable housing, plenty of green space and a straightforward, direct manner. This section is about settling in. We describe the transport via the A2 on our Long-Distance Move Berlin Dortmund page.
Registering with the citizens’ services
In Dortmund, the city’s citizens’ services (Bürgerdienste) handle registration. There are several locations, including in the city districts. The deadline is two weeks after moving in. Bring your ID and the landlord’s confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). If you move to a neighbouring town such as Lünen, Unna or Schwerte, you register with the local administration there.
From the Kreuzviertel to Hörde
The Kreuzviertel is one of the most popular residential areas in the city, with period buildings, pubs and short walks to the Westfalenpark. Hörde has changed considerably around the Phoenix-See, where modern flats and houses have been built. The Nordstadt is colourful and lively, but densely built up. Families are often drawn to Hombruch, Brünninghausen or the suburbs. For your move this means: in the Kreuzviertel and the Nordstadt, no-parking zones are important; at the Phoenix-See, moves into new builds with lifts are usually quicker.
Mining estates and terraced houses
Mining estates (Zechensiedlungen) with small houses, gardens and narrow paths are typical of the Ruhr area. Anyone moving into such an estate often encounters narrow stairs and low ceilings during the move. Large wardrobes have to be dismantled, and sometimes the walk from the van to the front door is long because the estate roads are narrow. We clarify access in advance and send enough helpers.
Home matches and traffic
On home match days, the area around the stadium and the access roads in Dortmund are very busy. If your new flat is in the south of the city, check the fixture list before you fix the moving date. A move on a match day is possible, but it takes more time and good planning.
Costs at a glance
A move to Dortmund usually takes two days. The costs depend on volume, floors, carrying distances and additional services such as packing or assembly. If you pack yourself and are flexible with the date, you can save money. An overview of the factors can be found on our Moving Company Berlin Costs page.
Studies and training
With TU Dortmund and several universities of applied sciences, the city attracts many students every year. For them, a part-load or a small move with a van is often worthwhile. If you are only furnishing a room, you don’t need a large lorry. We are happy to advise you on the most affordable options.
Settling into the Ruhr
Dortmund has a dense network of light rail, S-Bahn and buses, and many journeys can be made by bike. The Westfalenpark, Rombergpark and the lakes in the south offer places to relax. After the move, it is worth visiting one of the many industrial heritage sites that show where the city comes from.
One more note about flats owned by large housing companies: in Dortmund, many rented flats belong to large landlords who have their own rules for handovers and moves. Ask for a local contact person and clarify whether the stairwell and lift need to be protected for the move.
