How your long-distance move between Berlin and Bremen succeeds
Why Lion Umzüge for your long-distance move?
You receive individual planning from Berlin that puts your wishes and particular requirements at the centre. In advance, we discuss which services you would like, which items need special attention and how the process should be organised. Your contact person remains available throughout the entire organisation.
How your long-distance move works
A structured process creates certainty and reduces stress. We agree every step with you and adapt it to the conditions on site.
- Initial consultation and survey: determining the volume, access and any special requirements.
- Quote: a transparent quote based on the survey and your wishes.
- Preparation and packing: systematic packing, labelling and protection of fragile items.
- Loading and transport: orderly loading in Berlin, secure stowage and the drive to Bremen or vice versa.
- Unloading and setting up: furniture is placed in the agreed spots, followed by a final debrief on site.
Packing and special transports
We handle special items such as porcelain, musical instruments or large pieces of furniture with particular care. We use suitable protective materials and sturdy packaging so that nothing slips or gets damaged. For bulky pieces, we offer well-founded solutions for dismantling and reassembly so that everything can be transported safely and in a space-saving way.
Preparation in Bremen and Berlin
Good preparation at both ends makes moving day considerably easier. Label boxes by room, draw up an inventory list and keep important documents and valuables separate. As Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin, we coordinate the collection and the long-distance transport from here; for local arrangements in Bremen we give you clear advice and recommendations without pretending to have a local presence there.

Moving to Bremen: Bremen houses and steep stairs
It is around 390 kilometres from Berlin to Bremen, usually via the A24 and the A1 past Hamburg. For a small flat and an early start, we can complete the move in one day. For larger households, we plan two days so that we are not under time pressure assembling wardrobes in Bremen in the evening.
The Bremen house as a challenge
Typical of Bremen are the so-called Bremer Häuser (Bremen houses): narrow terraced houses from the Gründerzeit era with a raised ground floor, steep, narrow staircases and often only one room per floor facing the street. You find them above all in the Viertel, in Findorff, in Schwachhausen and in the Neustadt. For a move, this means that large furniture almost always has to be dismantled, and sometimes a sofa only fits through a window or does not make it to the upper floor at all. So measure the staircase and doors before the move and send us the dimensions.
What we bear in mind with Bremen period buildings
- Allow more time for dismantling and assembling large furniture
- Protection for wooden banisters and stair treads
- Short distances from the lorry to the front door thanks to a no-parking zone
- Clarifying which items might be better left in Berlin or disposed of
If not everything comes along
Because Bremen houses are often laid out differently from Berlin period flats, some furniture no longer fits. We can collect it in Berlin and dispose of it properly – more on this under House Clearance Berlin. Conversely, we also store furniture if you do not yet know where to put it; details can be found under Storage Berlin.
Costs and route
The price of a move to Bremen depends on the volume, floors, assembly work and whether one or two days are needed. The page Moving Company Berlin Costs explains the cost factors. If you would like to compare a move to another northern German city, also read about the long-distance move Berlin–Hamburg.
After arrival
In Bremen, you register at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) within two weeks. You can then unpack the boxes we have placed in each room, labelled by room, at your leisure.
To Bremen via two possible routes – transport at a glance
There are around 390 kilometres between Berlin and Bremen. A long-distance move there is easy to plan, but requires a conscious decision about route and schedule. Here we describe the transport part of your move. What matters in Bremen after arrival, such as registering at the BürgerServiceCenter, residential areas and costs, can be found on the page Moving Berlin Bremen.
Via Hamburg or via Hanover
There are two common routes to Bremen. The first runs via the A24 towards Hamburg and then via the A1 to Bremen. The second runs via the A2 towards Hanover and on via the A7 and the A27. Both routes are roughly the same length. The route via Hamburg is often more relaxed, but traffic can build up around Hamburg and the Maschen interchange. The route via Hanover uses the very busy A2. We decide the day before based on the traffic reports.
One day or two days
With four to five hours of driving time for a lorry, a move to Bremen in one day is possible if the flat is not too large and the boxes are fully packed. For family flats or houses we plan two days. That way, loading can be done calmly on the first day, and on the second day there is enough time to unload and assemble the most important furniture.
Bremen houses and the choice of vehicle
Bremen has many typical old Bremen houses, narrow terraced houses with two or three floors and steep stairs. The streets in front of them are often narrow, and a large lorry can hardly stop there. We therefore choose vehicles that suit the streets in your destination neighbourhood. In the Viertel, in Findorff or in Schwachhausen, compact lorries are the better choice. In new-build areas on the outskirts, larger vehicles are no problem.
Part load to the north
If you only want to take a few pieces of furniture to Bremen, you can benefit from a part load. Your belongings are bundled with other consignments heading for northern Germany. This is cheaper than a dedicated lorry but requires some flexibility regarding the delivery date. For students at the University of Bremen or for commuters with a second home, this is often the best solution.
Weather on the Weser
The weather in Bremen is often windy and rainy. When unloading, we make sure that furniture and boxes do not get wet. Upholstered furniture and mattresses travel in protective covers, and when it rains we cover the path between the vehicle and the front door as well as possible. Boxes containing paper, books or electronics are carried into the dry first.
One contact person for the whole journey
With us, you have a dedicated contact person who accompanies the move from the survey in Berlin to the last box in Bremen. They keep you informed about the departure, any delays and the expected arrival time. This lets you plan your day and be at the new flat with the key in good time.
What you should clarify in advance
Before the move, check whether the new flat has already been painted and whether tradespeople will be on site. If work is still going on, we coordinate the process so that the removal team and the tradespeople do not get in each other’s way. A no-parking zone in front of the new building should also be applied for from the City of Bremen in good time.
