Our process for long-distance moves Berlin–Hamburg
A clear process reduces stress and avoids surprises on moving day. We agree every phase with you and confirm the agreed services in writing.
- Consultation and on-site survey: clarifying your requirements, discussing special items and recording the access situation.
- Quote: a detailed written quote with the services you have chosen and tips on preparation.
- Material delivery and packing: provision of boxes and protective material; professional packing of fragile items on request.
- Loading and unloading: careful handling, proper load securing and gentle transport of your furniture and boxes.
- Handover at the destination: unloading, provision of equipment and help with unpacking as agreed.
Special transports and delicate furniture
Special items such as art, antiques or bulky furniture require tailor-made solutions. We choose suitable padding, sturdy packaging and secure strapping methods for the journey.
In advance, we clarify the best way to handle each item and discuss whether special protective measures or dismantling individual pieces makes sense. This minimises risks during the journey and when reloading.

Preparation: how to make the move easier
Thorough preparation saves time and makes unpacking at your new home easier. Use clear labels and an inventory list, and mark boxes by room.
Sort out things you no longer need in advance, and set aside an area for important documents and valuables that you would like to transport separately.
Good to know before moving day
Do I have to pack everything myself? You decide which services you want. We offer both material delivery and professional packing help for furniture and fragile items. Many customers pack small personal items themselves and let us secure large or delicate pieces.
Does Lion Umzüge also organise services at the destination in Hamburg? Lion Umzüge coordinates the transport and handover from Berlin. We can take on services such as unpacking or assembly at the destination by arrangement, but these are organised by us as a Berlin company.

Moving from Berlin to Hamburg: short distance, narrow staircases
At around 290 kilometres via the A24, the distance is manageable for a long-distance move. In many cases we load in Berlin in the morning and unload in Hamburg in the early afternoon. The bigger challenge is usually not on the motorway but in front of the building: in Eimsbüttel, Ottensen, Winterhude or Barmbek there are densely built rows of period buildings, the streets are full of parked cars, and many staircases are so narrow that large sofas or wardrobes can only be taken up dismantled or with a lot of experience.
What we would like to know from you before the move
- Which floor is the new flat on, and is there a lift?
- Roughly how wide are the staircase and the front door of the flat?
- Can the lorry stop directly in front of the building, or is there an inner courtyard?
- Which large pieces of furniture are coming along, and can they be dismantled?
With this information we plan whether additional straps, furniture dollies or more carriers are needed. Especially with Hamburg period buildings with winding staircases, it pays to have large pieces professionally dismantled in Berlin.
No-parking zones at both addresses
Without free space in front of the door, every move becomes a test of patience. In Berlin we can take care of the no-parking zone for you on request. For Hamburg, you apply for the zone at the responsible local office or talk to us about organising it. Allow several weeks’ lead time for this.
When moving out and moving in do not match
It is not unusual for the new flat in Hamburg to become available only a few days after you move out in Berlin. In that case we can store your furniture temporarily and deliver it on the agreed date. You can find out more on our Storage Berlin page. The costs you should expect are explained on our Moving Company Berlin Costs page, and Long-Distance Moves Berlin gives an overview of all long-distance destinations.
How moving day to Hamburg works
We start early in the morning in Berlin so that we avoid the rush hours on the Berlin ring road and before Hamburg as far as possible. After loading, the drive takes around three to four hours. In Hamburg we unload the bedroom and kitchen furniture first so that these rooms can be used quickly. Boxes and the rest of the furnishings follow. Before we leave, we check together with you that everything is in its place and nothing has been damaged.
After moving in to Hamburg
Register within two weeks at the customer centre (Kundenzentrum) of your district office. Remember the mail forwarding order, your new address for your bank and insurers, and re-registering your vehicle.
Transport planning Berlin–Hamburg: what matters over around 290 kilometres
Here we describe how the transport from Berlin to Hamburg is organised: route, time windows, choice of vehicle and whether a dedicated lorry or a part load is worthwhile. If you would like to know what to do on arrival in Hamburg, such as registering at the Kundenzentrum, neighbourhoods or local costs, read our Move Berlin Hamburg page.
The A24 as a direct connection
Berlin and Hamburg are directly connected by the A24. The route runs through sparsely populated areas of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is usually clear outside the holiday periods. Bottlenecks tend to occur at the ends: at the Havelland interchange on the Berlin side and on the last kilometres before Hamburg via the Horner Kreisel area into the city. We plan the start so that we do not reach Hamburg in rush-hour traffic.
One day is enough – with good preparation
The driving time is around three to four hours, depending on traffic and vehicle. This makes the move to Hamburg one of the few long-distance moves that can be completed in a single day: loading in Berlin in the morning, driving at midday, unloading in Hamburg in the afternoon. This requires the boxes to be fully packed the evening before and large furniture to be already dismantled or quick to dismantle. For larger households we prefer to plan two days so that nobody works under time pressure.
Choosing the right vehicle for Hamburg’s streets
In many Hamburg districts, such as Eimsbüttel, Ottensen or St. Pauli, the streets are narrow and space in front of the buildings is limited. A large articulated lorry will not fit there. We therefore use lorries that are big enough for your home but can still drive into normal residential streets. For very large moves it can make sense to use two smaller vehicles instead of one large one.
Part load as a low-cost option
Because there are many moves between Berlin and Hamburg, a part load is easy to plan on this route. Your furniture and boxes then travel together with other consignments. For students, commuters with a second home or people with a small household, this is a good solution. You specify a time window for collection and delivery, and we combine the journeys.
Protection from rain and wind
Hamburg’s weather is famously changeable. If it rains during unloading, we cover furniture with film and carry quickly. Mattresses and upholstered furniture travel in protective covers, and boxes stand on pallets or blankets in the vehicle so that no water rises from the floor. Little things that make the difference when the journey starts in sunshine and ends in drizzle.
Return journey and cost structure
With long-distance moves, the return journey of the empty vehicle is also included in the price. If we have a return load from Hamburg to Berlin, this can have a favourable effect. Feel free to ask when enquiring whether your preferred date can be moved flexibly. Sometimes one day earlier or later saves a noticeable amount of money.
