A long-distance move between Berlin and Hamburg requires a clear structure, reliable communication and sensitive handling of your belongings. Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and accompanies you personally through every phase of the move – from the first consultation to the handover at the destination. We deliberately do not present ourselves as a local company in Hamburg, but organise the transfer responsibly from Berlin.

Your move Berlin–Hamburg: personally planned and transparently carried out
Personal advice & precise preparation
In the first step, we have a detailed conversation to record your needs and wishes. Together we clarify access, parking options, stairs or lifts as well as items that need particular protection.
- Enquiry and initial consultation to clarify your needs
- Inventory and targeted packing planning
- Preparation of an individual service plan
- Packing and professional protection of fragile pieces
- Coordinated transport, loading and unloading at the destination
- Final inspection together with you on site
Safe packing and protection of fragile items
Packing often determines the condition on arrival. We recommend and use suitable materials and stacking techniques, label boxes and protect furniture edges and breakable contents separately.
Transport organisation and communication
A long-distance move requires a clear process: scheduling, load securing and a transparent chain of information. Throughout the entire process, you have clear contacts in Berlin who inform you about every relevant step.

Arrival in Hamburg: unloading, assembly and completion
At the destination, we unload and set up your furniture in the desired places. Minor assembly work and then going through the inventory list together are part of the completion, so that you can move in quickly.
Moving Berlin–Hamburg: three options compared
Anyone moving from Berlin to Hamburg basically has three options: doing everything yourself with a hire van, a moving company for the entire move, or a mixed form in which you pack and we carry and drive. Which option suits you depends on your household goods, your time and your budget. The following table helps you decide.
| Option | Advantage | Disadvantage |
|---|---|---|
| Yourself with a van | low costs | many trips, helpers needed, own risk in case of damage |
| You pack, we transport | good value for money | packing costs you a few evenings |
| Full service | hardly any effort on your part | higher costs due to additional working hours |
Many of our customers choose the middle option: they pack the boxes themselves, and we take care of dismantling furniture, transport and reassembly. If you are short of time, you can add individual rooms via our packing service.
Coordinating flat hunting and the moving date
The Hamburg housing market is tight, and the start of the tenancy is often only confirmed at short notice. Still, enquire with us early, even if the date is not yet certain. We can already carry out the survey in Berlin and fix the date as soon as you have the tenancy agreement. If your notice period and the start of the tenancy do not match, we store your furniture temporarily – details under storage Berlin.
How long does the move to Hamburg take?
At around 290 kilometres, the route via the A24 is manageable. We can usually handle a one- to three-room flat in one day; we spread larger households over two days. What determines the duration is less the kilometres than the carrying distances: a fifth floor without a lift in Eimsbüttel takes more time than the drive itself.
Estimating costs realistically
The biggest items are staff, vehicle and working time. We explain how these items are calculated on the page moving company Berlin costs. You can read more about the procedure on this route on our page about the long-distance move Berlin–Hamburg.
The first weeks in Hamburg
After moving in, you have two weeks to register at the Kundenzentrum (customer service centre). Your car registration, bank, health insurance and employer should also receive the new address promptly. If you have children, it is best to arrange nursery or school places before the move.
Hamburg particularities when moving in
In many Hamburg period buildings, the flats are on the raised ground floor, reached via a few steps from the pavement. Stairwells are often winding and narrow. In new-build districts such as HafenCity, on the other hand, there are lifts and underground car parks, but also strict house rules and fixed times for deliveries. Clarify these rules with the property management beforehand.
Plan for Hamburg weather
It rains more often in Hamburg than in Berlin. We therefore protect furniture with film, lay mats in entrance areas and load and unload boxes quickly. Please have a few old towels or a doormat ready in the new stairwell.
Arriving in Hamburg: what matters after moving from Berlin
This page is about your new life in Hamburg and how the move as a whole goes well for you: planning, authorities, neighbourhoods and costs. We describe in detail how we organise the transport on the A24, with route, vehicle and part load, on the page long-distance move Berlin Hamburg.
Registering at the Kundenzentrum
In Hamburg, you register your new residence at one of the Kundenzentren (customer service centres) of the district offices. As everywhere in Germany, you have two weeks after moving in to do so. Appointments are in demand in Hamburg just as in Berlin, so it is worth booking one online before the move. You should bring your ID card or passport and the landlord’s confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) issued by your landlord. You do not have to deregister separately in Berlin if you are moving within Germany. Registering in Hamburg takes care of this automatically.
Districts with their own character
People coming from Berlin often look for a similar way of life in Hamburg. Ottensen, St. Pauli, the Schanze and Eimsbüttel, with their period buildings, cafés and dense development, are reminiscent of Friedrichshain or Neukölln. Winterhude and Eppendorf are more middle-class, rather comparable to Charlottenburg. People with children often move to Barmbek, Wandsbek or the Walddörfer. For the move, this means: in the dense period neighbourhoods, narrow stairwells and scarce parking are the rule; in the outer districts things are more relaxed.
Hamburg stairwells
Many Hamburg period buildings have steep, winding stairs. Large wardrobes and sofas sometimes do not fit around the corner. Measure the stairwell of your new flat before the move or send us photos. Then we can decide in advance whether a piece of furniture needs to be dismantled or whether it can be brought in through a window with a furniture lift.
What a move to Hamburg costs
The costs depend mainly on the volume of your household goods, the number of helpers, the floors and the additional services. At around 290 kilometres, the route itself is manageable. It becomes more expensive if two days are needed, if a lot has to be packed or if there are long carrying distances at both addresses. Our page moving company Berlin costs gives an initial overview of the cost factors. We prepare a binding quote after an on-site survey.
Electricity, internet and broadcasting fee
Remember to register electricity and internet for the new address in good time. Many providers operate nationwide, so you can take your contract with you. The broadcasting licence fee continues at the new address; updating your details is enough. Your bank, insurers and employer also need your new address.
The first days in the new city
Plan a few days to settle in after the move. Unpacking boxes, connecting lamps, finding the way to the nearest supermarket. Hamburg’s public transport network with U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and harbour ferries is well developed. If you have a Deutschlandticket, you can continue to use it as normal in Hamburg.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Who is my contact person on site in Hamburg?
Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and organises your move from Berlin. Your central contact remains our team in Berlin, which coordinates the processes and keeps you informed about all steps. Should specific actions be necessary on site, we discuss these with you in advance.
How can I check the condition of my furniture during long-distance transport?
We recommend a structured inventory including photos before the transport. At the handover at the destination, we jointly check the condition of the furniture against these photos and the inventory list, so that any irregularities can be documented immediately.
How much does a move from Berlin to Hamburg cost?
Hamburg is around 290 kilometres away, and the drive via the A24 takes about three hours. That is why volume, floors and carrying distances mainly determine the price – in period buildings in Eimsbüttel or Ottensen often without a lift. You receive a fixed price. More under moving company Berlin costs.
How long does a move from Berlin to Hamburg take?
We complete most moves to Hamburg in one day: loading in Berlin in the morning, on the A24 at midday, unloading in Hamburg in the afternoon. Only large households or a lot of assembly work are spread over two days.
How much lead time do I need for a move from Berlin to Hamburg?
Four to six weeks’ lead time is usually enough. Because Hamburg can be done in one day, we can often find a date at shorter notice during the week.
How are my belongings insured when moving from Berlin to Hamburg?
On the route to Hamburg, liability under § 451e HGB (German Commercial Code) applies, i.e. 620 euros per cubic metre of required loading space. For heirlooms or a piano, we recommend supplementary insurance with a list of values.
Do I need a parking restriction zone when moving from Berlin to Hamburg?
In both cities, usually yes. In Berlin as in Hamburg’s densely built neighbourhoods, there is rarely space for a lorry in front of the door. We apply for the zones at both addresses. More on the Berlin procedure under parking restriction zone Berlin.
