Our process
To ensure that your long-distance move runs smoothly, we work according to a clear, transparent process. It serves as a guide and is adapted individually to your situation:
- Initial consultation and needs assessment on site or by video.
- Individual quote and scheduling.
- Careful packing and protection of your furniture and belongings.
- Loading in Berlin and safe transport towards Bochum.
- Unloading and placement exactly where you want things in your new home.
- Acceptance with you and final clarification of any open points.
Preparation and packing
Good preparation saves time when setting up and reduces the risk of damage. We advise you on which packing materials make sense and how particularly delicate items can be packed safely. On request we take care of all the packing, including professional padding and labelling of the boxes.
Transport and handover
The transport is planned so that loading and unloading run in a structured way. We agree time slots with you and make sure the load is clearly labelled so that unloading at the destination is quick and well organised. Please note: Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin; we act as your central point of contact and do not name a local removals company in Bochum.

Additional services and individual solutions
Every long-distance move has different requirements. We offer solutions for bulky furniture, delicate technology and special transport goods. We also help with furniture assembly, short-term storage and the safe disposal of packing materials. Talk to us about special requests — we will find a practical solution.
Good to know before moving day
How is everything coordinated before the move? Answer: In the initial consultation we clarify your requirements and agree whether an on-site survey or a video appointment makes sense. You then receive a quote that transparently describes the services included. We incorporate changes flexibly right up to the move.
What happens if items are particularly delicate? Answer: For delicate objects we plan special packing and securing measures. In the preliminary discussion we determine which measures are necessary and document them so that everything is professionally prepared for transport.

Moving Berlin–Bochum: into the heart of the Ruhr
Bochum lies in the heart of the Ruhr area, around 510 kilometres from Berlin. The journey follows the A2 and then the region’s dense motorway network. We usually plan this move over two days so that the team arrives rested and can unload and assemble in Bochum without time pressure.
Living in Bochum
Bochum is a university city with many students, but also a city with a long industrial history. Around Ehrenfeld and the city centre there are many period buildings; in Querenburg near the Ruhr University there are high-rises and halls of residence with lifts. In districts such as Langendreer, Wattenscheid or Linden there are former miners’ estates, terraced houses and detached houses. Each of these addresses needs its own planning in terms of vehicle size and staff.
Moving into a hall of residence or a flat share
Anyone moving to Bochum to study often only has one room to furnish. Halls of residence usually have fixed handover times and sometimes rules for using the lift. Clarify these in advance and we will plan the date accordingly. For such small moves, a mini move or a part load is often the cheapest solution.
Moving with a family
Families often move to quieter districts or into a house. Then garden furniture, bicycles and workshop items are added. During the survey we also go through the cellar, attic and garage with you so that nothing is forgotten and the vehicle is big enough.
Tips for preparation
- Apply to the city for a parking ban zone in Bochum
- Note down the dimensions of the stairwell and doors in the new house
- Label boxes by room
- Register at the citizens’ office (Bürgerbüro) within two weeks
Costs

Bochum: a long-distance move into the heart of the Ruhr
Bochum lies in the middle of the Ruhr area, around 500 kilometres west of Berlin. The city is known for the Ruhr University, the Bermuda Triangle with its pubs, the Schauspielhaus theatre and a mining past that still shapes the cityscape today. Anyone moving here from Berlin will find affordable flats, short distances and many neighbouring cities close by. Here we explain how the move works and what to look out for in Bochum.
The route and the schedule
The route follows the A2 to the Kamener Kreuz junction and then the A1 and A43 or the A40 to Bochum. With five to six hours of driving time and the mandatory breaks, we usually plan the move over two days. On the first day we load in Berlin, and on the second day we set off early. We aim to reach the Ruhr area after the morning rush hour, because the A40 is one of the busiest motorways in Germany.
Registering at the citizens’ office
In Bochum you register at one of the citizens’ offices (Bürgerbüros), which are located in the city centre and in several districts. The deadline is two weeks after moving in. Bring your ID and the landlord’s confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). If you move to Herne, Witten or Hattingen, the respective city is responsible.
Districts between the university and the city centre
Ehrenfeld and the area around the Stadtpark are popular, with period buildings close to the city centre. Querenburg is shaped by the Ruhr University, with many student flats and large housing estates. Langendreer, Weitmar and Stiepel offer quieter residential areas, some with houses and gardens. In the south of the city, towards the river Ruhr, it becomes greener and hillier. For the move we plan different vehicles and teams depending on the district.
Mining and building stock
Bochum has many colliery estates with small houses, steep stairs and low ceilings. Large wardrobes often only fit in there when dismantled. In addition, some houses stand on former mining land. This makes no difference to your move, but if you are buying a property you should find out about possible mining damage.
Studying at the Ruhr University
The Ruhr University is one of the largest universities in Germany. At the start of the semester many students move to Bochum, often with little luggage. For them a part load is an inexpensive option. Your belongings travel to the Ruhr area together with other consignments.
Keeping an eye on costs
The costs depend on volume, floors, carrying distances and additional services. If you pack yourself and dismantle furniture, you save money. With two moving days, the team’s overnight stay and travel time are added. We prepare a binding quote after a survey or on the basis of an inventory list.
Arriving in the Ruhr
The Ruhr area is a region where the cities merge into one another. By S-Bahn and U-Bahn you can quickly get to Essen, Dortmund or Gelsenkirchen. Lake Kemnade, the Ruhr valley and the many industrial monuments make life here varied. The people are considered direct and warm-hearted, and you quickly make friends.
A note on flats owned by large landlords: in Bochum, many rented buildings belong to large housing companies. They have fixed procedures for handover, keys and moving times. Ask in advance whether the move has to be registered.
If you later move on from Bochum, for example to Dortmund or Essen, the distances are short. We plan such moves within the Ruhr area just as carefully as the long journey from Berlin.
