Individual advice before the move

Every long-distance move has its own requirements. In an initial conversation, we clarify your wishes, any special access routes or fragile items and draw up a realistic schedule. The advice is tailored to your circumstances – whether it is a complete household, individual pieces of furniture or delicate antiques.

Transport safety and packing

We use suitable packing materials and safe loading techniques so that your belongings are protected during the long transit. Special items are professionally padded and loaded so that they stand securely and shocks are absorbed.

How your long-distance move works

So that you know exactly what happens when, we work according to a clear process. This plan helps avoid surprises and ensures transparent steps from the first appointment to the handover.

  1. Consultation & survey: personal conversation and inventory.
  2. Quote & coordination: clearly defined services, tailored to your needs.
  3. Packing & dismantling: careful preparation of your furniture and belongings.
  4. Transport & transit: safe loading and the journey to Portugal or to Berlin.
  5. Unloading & set-up: unpacking, assembly and positioning on site.

Moving from Berlin to Portugal: almost 3,000 kilometres to the Atlantic

Portugal is one of the most distant destinations within the EU. It is around 2,600 kilometres to Porto, about 2,900 to Lisbon and even more to the Algarve. The route runs through Germany, France and Spain. With the drivers’ rest periods, the lorry is on the road for several days. We therefore plan such moves with fixed loading and delivery dates and plenty of buffer.

Formalities

  • Tax number (NIF) – needed for your tenancy agreement, bank account and almost all contracts
  • Registration as an EU citizen for longer stays in accordance with Portuguese rules
  • Deregistration at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office) in Berlin
  • No customs duties for household goods within the EU

In many cases you can apply for the NIF before the move. This makes looking for a flat considerably easier.

Living in Lisbon and Porto

Both cities are hilly, and the old-town lanes are narrow, steep and partly cobbled. A large lorry cannot get right up to the door there. In such cases, the load is transferred to a smaller vehicle on the outskirts. Many older buildings have no lift and narrow stairs. On the edge of town and along the coast there are new builds and houses with better access. Send us photos and a description of the access.

Dedicated lorry or part load?

Over almost 3,000 kilometres, the difference between a dedicated lorry and a part load is considerable. For a large household with a fixed move-in date, dedicated transport makes sense. If you are only taking part of your belongings or are flexible, you can save a lot of money with a part load.

What you do not need to take

Many Portuguese rented flats come with a kitchen and appliances, and the climate makes heavy winter clothing partly unnecessary. Go through your household goods critically. Whatever stays in Berlin we can dispose of or put into storage – see house clearance Berlin.

Costs

On the way to Portugal there are tolls in three countries, fuel, overnight stays and the return journey. The basics of how prices are calculated can be found under moving company Berlin costs. You will find all destinations abroad under international moves Berlin, and information on the neighbouring country under moving Berlin–Spain.

Moving to Portugal: the Atlantic, Lisbon and a long journey

In recent years, Portugal has become one of the most popular destinations for Germans who want to work abroad, live as digital nomads or spend their retirement there. Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve are particularly sought after. As Portugal is an EU country, the move is duty-free, but the distance is great and the local formalities require preparation.

Around 2,800 kilometres

It is around 2,800 kilometres from Berlin to Lisbon and slightly less to Porto. The route runs through Germany, France and Spain. For a lorry that means four to five days, with overnight stays and tolls in France, Spain and Portugal. In Portugal, some motorway tolls are collected electronically. Over such distances, a part load is often the cheapest solution for smaller households, as the cost of a dedicated lorry is considerable.

NIF and registration

In Berlin, you deregister at the Bürgeramt. In Portugal, you need a tax number, the NIF, for almost everything. It is applied for at the tax office. EU citizens staying longer than three months register with the municipality and receive a registration certificate. There is a further number for health insurance and the health system. The procedures can take some time, so allow for a buffer.

Living in Lisbon and Porto

The old towns of Lisbon and Porto are built on hills, with steep, narrow lanes and cobblestones. Many buildings have no lift, and large lorries cannot get right up to the door. For such addresses, we work with local partners who use smaller vehicles and know the local conditions. In new-build areas and on the Algarve, access is usually easier.

Climate and packing

In Portugal it is hot in summer and often humid on the coast. We protect furniture and boxes that are in transit for a long time with film and sturdy packaging. Items that do not tolerate heat should be transported by yourself.

Retirement and taxes

Many pensioners are drawn to Portugal. Find out in advance how your pension will be taxed, how you will be covered by health insurance and which rules apply to your situation. The tax framework in Portugal has changed in recent years, so professional advice is worthwhile.

Costs

The costs depend on distance, volume, type of transport and delivery. A part load can reduce costs significantly. Find out more on our page international moves Berlin.

Arriving in Portugal

Portugal is hospitable, and many people speak English. A Portuguese course nevertheless makes everyday life and contact with neighbours easier.

Madeira and the Azores

Some customers do not move to the mainland but to Madeira or the Azores. These islands belong to Portugal but can only be reached by ship or plane. For household goods, this means sea transport from a mainland port, usually Lisbon. Transit times are longer, and delivery on the islands is handled by local partners. Allow considerably more time for such a move and contact us early so that we can coordinate the connections.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Do you also help with packing materials and the professional packing of fragile items?

Yes. We provide packing materials and take care of the professional packing of fragile items. On request, we also use special padding solutions and safe loading techniques.

Do you only deliver between certain cities, or throughout Germany and internationally?

Lion Umzüge is based in Berlin and carries out long-distance moves to Portugal and from Portugal to Berlin. We plan each route individually and keep you informed about the process, without claiming fixed routes or local branches at the destination.

How much does a move from Berlin to Portugal cost?

It is around 2,500 kilometres to Porto and almost 2,800 to Lisbon or the Algarve. Diesel, tolls in France, Spain and Portugal, several overnight stays and the return journey make up a large part of the price. Smaller households often travel more cheaply as a part load. General information under moving company Berlin costs.

How long does a move from Berlin to Portugal take?

With a dedicated lorry, we expect four to five days from loading to delivery in Lisbon or Porto. As a part load it can take longer, because the tour makes several stops.

How much notice do I need for a move from Berlin to Portugal?

Eight weeks’ notice or more makes sense for Portugal. The long route has to fit into our tour planning, and the flat handover in Lisbon or Porto should be confirmed by then.

How are my belongings insured when moving from Berlin to Portugal?

For the entire route to Portugal, we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB), usually with 620 euros per cubic metre of cargo space. With a journey of almost 3,000 kilometres, additional transport insurance for valuable items is advisable.

Do I need customs documents for a move from Berlin to Portugal?

No, Portugal is part of the EU, so your household goods do not need customs documents. However, plan for the Portuguese tax number (NIF) and register with the city administration as an EU citizen after three months.
