Moving to or from Spain – transparent and personal

Advice & individual planning

At the start, we discuss your expectations, the size of your household and special features such as narrow stairwells or bulky furniture. On this basis, we create a tailor-made plan that takes your priorities into account.

Packing & furniture protection

We secure fragile items and furniture with suitable materials. We suggest which things you can pack yourself and where it makes sense to use our support. If required, we take care of professional dismantling and reassembly.

Transport & logistics

Transport from Berlin to Spain requires clear communication: coordination of collection and delivery windows, load securing and coordination of the handover. We keep you regularly informed of the status and clarify all necessary details in advance.

Our process for long-distance moves

  1. Preliminary discussion by phone or on site in Berlin: inventory and clarification of your wishes.
  2. Individual quote with a detailed scope of services and a clear description of services.
  3. Scheduling and preparation: packing, labelling, dismantling as required.
  4. Loading in Berlin; securing the furniture and load for transport to Spain.
  5. Unloading at the destination as well as assembly and handover according to your specifications.

Berlin–Spain: a move of more than 2,000 kilometres

A move to Spain is a long journey for your furniture. Barcelona is around 1,850 kilometres away, Madrid about 2,300, Valencia around 2,100 and the Costa del Sol almost 2,800 kilometres. The route runs right across Germany and France. With the drivers’ mandatory rest periods, the lorry is on the road for several days. We therefore plan every move to Spain with fixed loading and delivery dates and enough buffer.

Full lorry or part load?

Over such distances, the question of whether you need your own lorry is particularly important. For a large household it is worthwhile, because you have a fixed date. For smaller quantities, a part load can be considerably cheaper – your belongings then travel together with other consignments, and the delivery date is somewhat more flexible.

Formalities in Spain

  • For almost all procedures in Spain you need an NIE, the identification number for foreigners
  • EU citizens staying longer than three months generally register in the register of foreign nationals
  • Registration with the municipality (empadronamiento) is a prerequisite for many dealings with the authorities
  • In Berlin you deregister at the Bürgeramt (citizens’ office)

Because appointments with Spanish authorities can be scarce, you should take care of this early.

Living in Spain

In the old towns of Barcelona, Madrid or Seville the streets are narrow, and large lorries often cannot get to the door. In that case, the load is transferred to a smaller vehicle. For holiday homes and fincas in the countryside, access roads are sometimes unpaved. Send us photos and a precise description of the access.

Heat and valuables

In summer it gets very warm in the cargo area of a lorry. You should therefore transport candles, medicines, wine or sensitive electronics yourself or protect them well. Our packing service packs fragile items with particular care.

Costs

For Spain, fuel, tolls, overnight stays and the return journey make up a large part of the price. How our prices are generally made up is explained under Moving Company Berlin Costs; further destinations are shown on International Moves Berlin. If you are moving even further west, you will find information on the page Moving Berlin–Portugal.

Moving to Spain: a long route, sunshine and Spanish bureaucracy

Spain is one of the most popular emigration destinations for Germans. Whether Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga or the Balearic and Canary Islands, many people look for a new life, a new job or a sunny retirement there. A move to Spain is, however, a real long-distance journey, and the formalities on site require patience.

More than 2,000 kilometres

From Berlin to Barcelona it is around 1,900 kilometres, to Madrid about 2,300, to Málaga considerably more. The route runs through Germany and France, over the Pyrenees into Spain. For a lorry that means three to five days, with overnight stops on the way. French and Spanish motorways are partly subject to tolls, and in France there are weekend driving bans for heavy lorries. Over such distances, a part load is often the most economical solution for small and medium-sized households.

Balearic and Canary Islands

Anyone wanting to move to the Balearic Islands also needs a ferry connection, for example from Barcelona or Valencia. The Canary Islands lie off the coast of Africa and, although they belong to Spain, they are not part of the EU VAT area. Special import formalities therefore apply to moves there. Find out early about the necessary forms and allow more time.

NIE and empadronamiento

In Berlin you deregister at the Bürgeramt. In Spain you need a foreigner identification number, the NIE, for almost all contracts. You also have to register in the municipal register of residents, the so-called empadronamiento. EU citizens who stay longer than three months also register in the central register of foreign nationals. Appointments with Spanish authorities are often scarce, and some procedures take time. Allow enough time and find out in advance from the Spanish embassy or consulate.

Living in Spain

In Spanish cities, many people live in apartment blocks with a lift, often with a concierge or caretaker. The old towns are narrow, and large lorries cannot get everywhere. On the coast and in the countryside, access roads to houses are sometimes steep and unpaved. If required, we work with local partners who use smaller vehicles.

Heat and packing

In summer it gets very hot in Spain. Sensitive items such as candles, food, medicines or electronics should not stand in a hot cargo area for days. Pack such things separately and take them with you yourself. We use sturdy packaging that withstands heat and a long journey well.

Costs

The costs depend on distance, volume, destination and additional services. For small quantities, a part load is usually cheaper. You can find more information on our page International Moves Berlin.

Arriving in Spain

Spain has a different daily rhythm from Germany. Shops close at midday, and people eat late. Those who embrace it quickly find their feet. A Spanish course before or after the move makes everyday life considerably easier.

Retirement in Spain

Many retirees move to Spain to spend the winter somewhere warm or to live there permanently. Clarify in advance how your pension will be paid, how you will be covered by health insurance and what tax consequences the move will have. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung (German pension insurance) and your health insurer can advise you on this. Anyone who only lives in Spain for part of the year can leave part of their household goods in Berlin or put them into storage. We help you decide what comes with you and what stays.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What should I prepare before moving from Berlin to Spain?

Declutter early and mark boxes by room. Make a list of particularly valuable or fragile items and tell us about any bulky goods. Good preparation makes organisation easier and reduces the effort on transport day.

How does the handover work on arrival in Spain?

We agree arrival times with you and carry out the unloading according to your instructions. You check the condition of the items; we document the completion of the work. Please note that Lion Umzüge Berlin organises and carries out the transport but does not operate as a local company at the destination.

How much does a move from Berlin to Spain cost?

Barcelona is around 1,850 kilometres away, Madrid about 2,300 and Málaga even further. Diesel, tolls in France and Spain, overnight stays and the long return journey make up a large part of the price. For smaller households, a part load can be cheaper. General cost factors under Moving Company Berlin Costs.

How long does a move from Berlin to Spain take?

For Barcelona or Valencia we expect three to four days from loading to delivery, for Andalusia four to five. With a part load it can take longer, because your household goods travel with other consignments.

How much lead time do I need for a move from Berlin to Spain?

For Spain we recommend at least eight weeks’ lead time. The long route has to fit into the trip planning, and at the destination you need a permit to stop in front of the building in many cities.

How are my belongings insured during a move from Berlin to Spain?

Over the entire route to Spain, liability under Section 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB) applies, i.e. 620 euros per cubic metre of loading space required. With more than 2,000 kilometres of driving, additional transport insurance is particularly worthwhile for valuable items.

Do I need customs papers for a move from Berlin to Spain?

No, Spain is an EU member, so your household goods do not need customs papers. However, plan for dealings with the authorities: the NIE number, registration with the municipality (empadronamiento) and, if applicable, registration as an EU citizen.
